Masks on their own pretty much help f all in preventing people from getting the virus. The virus is small and can gain access via tear ducts (masks and big spectacles are better). Masks help prevent you from spreading it to others.

I will be using a Surgical Mask for my flight this weekend. I dont give a **** what people think. Too many international travellers fly in & out of CPT for me not to use 1.

Being within breathing distance on a plane is reason enough for me to use a mask when flying domestically.
you'll be better served using surgical gloves

Unless you're planning on never touching the mask and never reusing it you're more likely to just create a petri dish close to your face and a higher chance of infection. Masks should be used by those who are coughing/sneezing etc or those who are working in a clinical setting. The virus is not airborne other than due to coughing/sneezing.

Many people cough & sneeze on a plane.

I think you will be surprised at how many people fail to cover their mouths when coughing.

Edit : you need a 1 metre distance to be safe from anybody who has been coughing or sneezing.

Disposable masks & hand sanitizers will be helpful in an enclosed environment.

So all the viruses from those coughs and sneezes wafting in your direction will collect on your mask just waiting for you to touch them and spread them around.

There is no recommendation either from the NICD, CDC or WHO that advises or recommends as such but each to their own. Furthermore, disposable masks provide little protection. N95 are approved but their purpose is only recommended for clinical settings or frontline medical personnel who are processing samples or interacting with patients. The average person does not know how to handle a mask to minimise infection thus rendering its benefit negligible at best and increased risk at worst.

Then you'd be better off giving your mask to them. Masks help keep what people have in - doesn't help stuff from getting in.

This is ridiculously reckless.

The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion

Do you really expect anything from Trump to be sensible?

What is this now?

The graphs compare the new cases and new deaths reported per day at the same stage of the outbreaks in Hubei province and Italy.

Hubei and Italy both have a population of +- 60 million and the epicentre of both seems to be in a large spread out city (Wuhan +- 11 million, Milan +- 8 million).

At the same point the Hubei outbreak was ahead of Italy in terms of new cases per day (this might indicate more aggressive testing in Hubei).

Italian deaths per day are exploding vs Hubei at +- 3 times as many at the same stage. The explanation may be that 7% of China's population is older than 70 vs 17% in Italy.

If you wear eye protection and gloves the mask will help.

But yes, don't touch your face, and follow careful procedures when removing masks, goggles, gloves, and clean your hands immediately.

Also, yes, give a mask to someone sneezing/coughing near you - if you can get them to wear it.
