Being the first in the Free State, it's unlikely he got it from one of the other already confirmed carriers then, which, in turn, means the person who infected him is still out there. Or is my logic flawed?
Logic is sound. Probably a wildcard or trumpcard from @Coronachan

C'mon be reasonable. All the packers already lick their fingers to open the packets. Also the bread rolls you bought are inflated by mouth.

Thankfully I have my own bag and also don’t eat bread, you know gluten and all that hipster ****.

This is not the first of these kind of comments here.

What are you guys basing this on, I mean other than science fiction movies and television?

Honestly: I read it somewhere. There was an article with a table comparing influenza, SARS, MERS, COVID-19 and one or two others IIRC.

The people who had created the chart indicated that if the virus takes hold in a population then it will mutate, once it mutates we are looking at iterative mutation and seasonal reinfection. It's taken hold in China, Italy and it seems like the US is next.

That article was relatively old.

A more recent article indicates that a second strain has already been identified.

Now, mutation could be good or bad. IIRC SARS mutated and extincted itself but that was a random outcome, it could just as easily become much more dangerous with each mutation, the higher the infection rate the more that dice is rolled.

I'm not an expert, in all honesty I find it all very confusing as I lack the foundational education on these topics.
