Problem is many of those address the symptoms, not the cause - ephedrine and its family being a vasodilator, antihistamines suppress the immune system.
Incorrect application can be catastrophic. The most famous example being loius washkansky - after a successful heart transplant Chris Barnard assumed organ rejection was occurring and pumped him full of antihistamine. The man died. It was the onset of pneumonia happening and the antihistamines killed off his immune system that was trying to fight the pneumonia.
