I'm getting a friend to bring me a Now TV box from the UK next week and wondered if anyone who has one knows if you can set the dns settings on device.

No, you need to set the DNS on the router. I sideloaded plex on mine as well.

If you want to control the box from your phone you have to use the webapp http://remoku.tv as you cannot install the app on the box from the limited roku store.

Why do you want a UK Roku instead of a US one? If you open a UK Roku account you can load the UK services onto a US Roku. If you want to access 4oD you will need one of these models: 4200X/EU, 3000X, 3050X, 3100X/EU, 3400X, 3420X, 2400X/EU, 2400SK. The Amazon Fire TV is already looking like a much more versatile platform than the Roku.

I want the UK channels like BBC iPlayer, ITV, 4OD, and NowTV being the main channel. I read these channels are not on the US firmware, only on the UK firmware. I then assumed I needed to purchase a UK version to get these apps.

So I suppose the question is, if I buy from Amazon US for cheaper, can I load the UK firmware and get the channels that I want?

With the exception of itv you can watch those on the NowTV box. :)

I should have been more precise.

Apart from the UK Channels as mentioned above, I would also like to have the Hulu and Netflix apps on the device. Unfortunately NowTV don't have those apps either.

So this is pretty much why I want a Roku with UK services. I just don't know if I buy from amazon US if I can load the UK services?

Saying that though, is it possible to import a NowTV box into SA?

EDIT: Here is the help page to see all the apps available. Click the "full list of apps available on the NOW TV Box" link at the bottom of the page

FYI, I've got an Apple TV which you can of course buy locally set to US which I get Netflix and Huluplus on, and my Samsung smart TV set to the UK region which means it automatically loads BBC iplayer, ITV, 4od and 5 on demand onto the smart hub. Set the unodns settings into the tv and you can watch all of the apps through the smart hub. Works like a charm :)

Personally I would look carefully at the new Amazon Fire TV. This is a much more powerful android based platform and should give you access to practically any streaming service that you desire.

I have a Roku HD 2500X (US version bought from Amazon Japan) and recently created a UK Roku account. I did manage to load BBC iPlayer, Now TV and Netflix UK. As I mentioned above, you need to have one of the models listed above in order to load 4oD (mostly older models) - mine is more recent and is not compatible. I doubt that 4oD will run on the latest Roku 1 and 2 even if you purchase them from Amazon UK. I don't think ITV is available on any of the Rokus.

If you want to switch between exclusive US services such as Hulu Plus and UK ones then you need to set up two different Roku accounts and do a factory reset and relink the Roku to the active account. This involves reconnecting all of the services such as Netflix (reinput account details etc.). To be honest it would be a lot more convenient just to purchase two different units.

Edit: It appears that 4oD is now available on the latest Roku 1 and 2 using the channel code 4od ...

Mid term break for the kids so I signed up for a free trial to tide them over during the break and I have to admit it's streaming very well these days. Haven't had a single bout of buffering.

I see NowTV has moved all the kids channels, except for Disney, off the Entertainment package and onto it's own kids channel for which they charge £2.99/pm

As I mentioned - except for Disney, which is just gone now.

Just in time for winter vacation

I tested out the NowTV entertainment package and didn't find anything that I thought was worth the subscription. A few days after the trial was over, I logged in and saw that for whatever reason, NowTv has give me a subscription that will only expire in 2018. Sadly, this is only for Entertainment and not for Sport.

Quality of streaming, especially for live sport is amazing. Best I've experience on the Apple TV.

What is the pciture quality and buffering like on Sling TV?

The stream adjusts to your available bandwidth, so no buffering. When the speed is good, you get crystal clear HD quality, when bad, its still watchable, but no buffering.
