NoWire Rebate

Just got a very interesting phone call from somebody high up in NoWire, and then later an email arrived that backed it up. In short I received another two months of access (October and November) in which I will not be charged for MyWireloss. This is in addition to the one month (September) of no-charged access that I received as a rebate.

The email sent to me is being sent to a list of clients - unfortunately (or maybe because NoWire learnt from Sentech how not to do mass mailings) only my name was on the list, so I cannot tell who else will receive it. The following is the body of the email:

---

Dear Sir/ Madam

NoWire would like to apologize for the current slow speeds that you are experiencing with your Sentech MyWireless internet connectivity. The problems causing these slow speeds with your connection are currently being addressed and we expect them to be rectified by the end of October. To compensate you for this inconvenience, we will not be charging you for your airtime for October and November.

---

This to my mind clearly indicates that somebody is recognising the seriousness of the speed issues, as well as the period that it extended over.

Stop. What just happend here ?

Nowire, gets a Noddy badge for admission of guilt. And everyone could cancel there contract as they have admited breach of contract.

heres what hapend [damm good guess] slowcom (formaly known as fastcom) threatened to pull the plug ... and close nowire sentech made plans to prevent this by offering 2 free months to appease the masses and do more dammage control ...

as they a gov dept the term bannana republic comes to mind ... the goverment is starting to look bad let alone the woman they appointed as CEO ...

does she want to be known as another failed AA placement gone wrong (not that she is black please dont get wrong idea i am not that way inclined but she is a black woman put in that posision to show us all it can work) man it is a 3 ring circus more than a 3G operation ...

i will have the greatest respect for the CEO if she steps in and makes some changes to ensure this comedy ends.

Look whatever the circumstances may be look at it in the global perspective this is probably the first time that i've actually heard of a supposed broadband solution actually owning up to the problem and actually providing a solution/compensation

Will telkom give u a rebate for bad speeds?
what's the chances sentech's gonna do it on their own?

For me this is a definite three thumbs up salute to nowire for having the courage not to hide behind the typical copy paste excuses.

If other companies follow the same trend then were just one step closer to having the level of service that is on offer in some first world countries.

Well in my honest opinion this has all happened because the so called CEO is a dum dum. She and probaly 80% of Sentech have no clue how to run a network at all. So in terms of respect... She will get none from me. At the end of the day they are taking our money and they are balzing up left right and centre. They dont know whether they coming or going. If they had just appointed someone who actually knew what they were doing from the beggining maybe all this would not have happen.

But anyways thats just my 2 cents.

Oh yes I also forgot to mention. This is not a blerry welfare organization. We all dont donate money out of goodwill. We are paying customers and when money is involved there is no room for error. Thats why America is a First World Country with a flourishing economy and we all here are subject to 3rd world conditions and 3rd world service. Hopefully it will change in the near future. But the fact of the matter is that in a business world if you make a mistake, you'll pay the price.

Well, I was told (again and by a different person - quite senior) that NoWire will be taking over all support, installation etc from Sentech. Sentech will only be providing the infrastructure and nothing else. Also, apparently a new company is being formed / has been formed (I cannot recall the name now, but it has the Fastcomm type of name that will handle this).

But yes, the Sentech debacle certainly makes for rather interesting reading. One day we will all laugh about this. One day...

I must say, as much as I dislike Sentech and the non-service I've been getting, I must commend NoWire on providing a three month rebate.

The rumours from within Sentech HQ is that the MyWi division will be spun off into a seperate, private company.
This private company will be operated by Fastcomm, and equity will be held by Sentech, Fastcomm and IPWireless (the MyWireless equipment manufacturer). Sentech will then provide pure connectivity services, and the private co will handle billing, customer service, installations and pretty much everything else.

The problem for the current MyWireless mainous like Marcel Raath, Winston Smith and the rest of the bumbling idiots that claim to know how to run an ISP is that if the private company happens, they will be out on their collective ass.
So currently they are trying their damndest to save face and ass...

Time will tell what the end result is.

Personally I think putting the majority of the operation into private company hands will be a good move by Sentech - especially since 2005 will be a year of major broadband competitiveness (iBurst, WISPs, ADSL). Sentech have proved they really do not have a clue about doing business with individuals, and they would be better suited to just keeping the network running and leaving the bandwidth, network and customer management to a nimbler private company.

Ha, "change of name" -> sounds to me like, "tainted brand". Everyone now associates the name "Sentech" with the historic lousiness of the MW product ... first thing you do to try recover such a business is change the name! (i.e. pretend it's a "new company" that's "taking over", as customers won't trust the old company anymore) and hopefully learn from your mistakes and run the new company a bit better, so a bit of restructuring is no doubt in order. Hopefully the current decision-makers (who seem not to like these pesky "customer" things) end up with less decision-making power.

It did sound like more than a mere name change - the guy that spoke to me was rather ... scathing (let's use a polite term here ;) ) about Sentech and their abilities. It certainly did not sound like Marcel and co would be involved. I agree with lewstherin that having it in private hands will be a good move.

For those that haven't heard anything - phone up the Helldesk and insist on opening a ticket wrt a rebate. I originally had a huge fight with an orc that (a) didn't want to open a ticket, then (b) wanted to close my open speed ticket from the 18th June and open a new one. Also, start tracking your speeds - go to http://www.tcpiq.com and install the line speed meter. That way you have hard figures. And point to the other customers, their problems and their track record.
