So it's Saturday night, it's cold and raining, and you need a good dvd to kill the hours. After grumbling that the video (dvd) store doesn't have most of their dvds in stock, you pick Bolt. Good choice. After watching the first 3 chapters, the movie suddenly jumps to the last chapter and your blood almost boils. As your slowly decompress while on your way back from the store with a different (less scratched) disk, the same thing happens.
The store manager asks, upon your 3rd entry into his store, if you're watching it on a dvd player. It seems that NEW Nu Metro dvds can only be watched on DVD players.

I'm a programmer, so I have a decent PC and a 22"wide screen. I do not own a TV nor a DVD player. This is, if nothing else, way over the boundary. I do understand that they need to make DVDs "Pirateproof", but now the paying customers (legal) can't even watch it! Just to note, I have 2 brilliant software packages that should remove the DVD's extra software (Piracy stuff) and they couldn't even make a dent. (Just for note, I make LEGAL copies of my own dvds and keep the original locked up safe. That's why I have the software).

As we're in africa, pointing out to Nu Metro that they're being ridiculous and have overstepped a few legal grounds, will be pointless.

Instead, what software can get around this? It will need to be new and confirmed that it can view Bolt and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

P.S.
+1 for PCs. :D The DVDs won't work on Consoles either. But on a PC, there's ways around it.

Talk about blood boiling! They could at least have the decency to cut you off from the start, not let you get 45min into the movie before it futs out....

I'd demand my money back and cancel my account. Stuff that shiat, try another store.

Awesome.
Another reason to turn to piracy added to the already looong list.
And all I want to do is to enjoy the entertainment I paid for.

I "rented" my copy of Bolt from the Internet. Screw their DRM and anti-piracy.

I rented a few movies this weekend, i also only have a PC DVD player, not a normal one... almost rented "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", so luckily it wasn't available!

so, how do we know we can't use a PC DVD player? does it say so on the cover? any stickers or anything?

How to back up Your DVDs and rip your DVD collection to your Hard Drive!

How to back up Your DVDs and rip your DVD collection to your Hard Drive!

1) Remove Region Protection...
Install this program first... it will remove the copy protection and macrovision while you decrypt... (and will also allow you to watch region protected discs in the future)...
http://www.dvd43.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD43

2) To make a backup of a DVD to another DVD...
DVD Decrypter can rip the DVD to your hard drive or make an ISO image...
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/
(Note: DVD Decrypter removes the CSS encryption on the DVD)
If DVDDecrypter has problems with a newer DVD install DVD43 (above).
If you have ripped the DVD files to your hard drive, you can then use DVD shrink to make the image smaller and turn it into an ISO file that I can fit onto one DVD... Note: you have to select ISO image as the target file from the drop down menu.
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
Once you have the ISO image you can use this program to burn it back to a DVD...
http://www.imgburn.com/

3) To Rip a DVD to an AVI or DivX (XviD) file...
The free version of this program Fair Use Wizard can rip any DVD to a 700 Mb AVI (XVid) File... with just one click...
http://www.fairusewizard.com/
but.... I find I get a much better quality rip, when I follow these steps...
i) Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your Hard Drive.
ii) Use DVD Shrink to make an ISO image of the DVD, but turn the compression off completely, in other words, the ISO image will be an exact image of the DVD. Also enable the two extra read options in DVD Shrink to get a better quality image, it is slower, but it pays off. Put that image on a different drive to the one you are going to rip to.
iii) Now use Fair Use Wizard to rip from that unencrypted image in your hard disk. You will get a very high quality rip with no artifacts and no "streaking".
Compare that to a rip straight from the DVD and you will see what I mean. Of course the quality of your DVD drive and speed of your processor is also a factor. 3.0 Ghz strongly recommended!

I'm not even surprised, with that kind of practice it's no wonder people pirate films.

I stopped buying local dvds a few years ago, I import everything from take2 and Amazon.co.uk. No cheap ads on the inside cover and no stupid anti-piracy ads before the film starts.

dvd43 in the Background. And if I still can't watch it, I make an ISO with DVDDecrypter

There is a Round White Icon on the Back Cover close to the barcode. The shop owner should also be able to point it out. But no, it doesn't specifically say that it won't work on PCs.

I had this problem a few years back with CDs as well. I bought the sound track to one of the new Star Wars Movies. When I went to play it on my PC (the only sound system I had in my house at that time) it would not play. It took some googling to figure out that the DRM prevented playback in the PC. That was the last commercial CD I ever bought I think (I don't listen to music much). The kids and wife have bought, but I refuse to buy anything that might be crippled.

-100 to Nu-Metro first of all  They should be reported for that BS.

As to your Benjamin Button question ...... I backed that movie up using DVDecrypter so don't know why you're having issues with it

I only tried it on Bolt, but according to the shop owner, Benjamin Button will do exactly the same. But I'll update all my software this afternoon and then try again.

The fact that it fails on a console is enough to justify a rant.

They should have huge warnings on the front of the case.

I think i'm going to go and copy a few of these disk just to prove that their DRM is fail. I have never copied a disk from a rental shop before but I think that this is a good reason to start !

I've done it a few times to watch a movie I had rented that I could not watch immediately. I have no problem with doing that. There is nothing in the rental agreement that says you have to watch it within the rental window. :)
