Johannesburg - Nude photographs of Sowetan girls as young as nine have been found on a website hosted by South Africans.

The photos had captions that gave the names of the girls, their surnames, places of birth and the dates on which the photos had been taken, said Goodness Zulu, head of the Film and Publication Board's child protection unit.

The girls were all between nine and 13 years old. One of the photos was dated 8 November 2008.

"About two weeks ago we received a tip-off from a member of the public on our anti-pornography website. We reported the matter to the police and when we checked on Monday, the website had already been shut down."

She said the site was being hosted by South Africans on a server abroad.

The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Pretoria is investigating the matter.

Zulu said children are enticed with promises of cellphones, airtime and money in exchange for posing naked for a photograph.

"Our children are very vulnerable. Some are orphans, but they still would like to have a cellphone.

"During the festive season children use the internet and their cellphones more often. This is the time that paedophiles are looking for children, and they use online chatrooms and MXit to get to them."

3 000 Google searches for child porn in SA

She said the Film and Publication Board was also busy with preparations to handle the expected increase in the manufacturing and distribution of child pornography during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Zulu said in the last couple of months there had been about 3 000 Google searches for child pornography in South Africa.

"We realise paedophiles are going to abuse the opportunity to make and distribute child pornography.

"They think all eyes will be on the soccer and they won't be caught out. But we're putting strategies in place to put a stop to that."

Consumers of child porn are just as guilty as the manufacturers and distributors. So sad really and all the child wants is some airtime or a cellphone... Very sad...

Child pr0n is bad and all but if you look at SA child abuse stats you'll see that most child abuse in SA is not photographed. Why aren't the authorities as vocal about stopping that too? Anyone have anything to comment about that?

When I read that headline I assumed someone was swapping phones for nude pics.

I'm willing to swop a nude pic of me (I am over 18) for a new 16GB iPhone. Any takers?

Child pr0n in SA won't be as bad when compared to other countries plainly due to the fact that our laws are one of the strictest worldwide and being in Africa, our (for the lack of a better word) exposure to technology and internet is severely limited. Child abuse on the other hand ... You don't need a camera/internet/technology to abuse children and I think only a fraction of those cases ever gets reported.

I also want to add that the South African Film and Publications Board won't be so vocal about child abuse per se, as it falls out of their scope of 'business'. I'm also calling BS on some of these articles stating that they shut down sites internationally - they cannot touch sites out of SA borders, unless it uses a .co.za domain maybe. The best they can do it forward any requests and tip-offs to the website hosts/relevant international agencies.

True, but these kids are still abused, to me it's all the same. Hang the fusckers that do this and slowly make the world a better place.

I'll be happy to send you a pic of Jessica Alba. For an iPhone I can look just like her.

The problem is that for one of these pictures, as sick as they are, 10.000 child abuse cases occurs under the noses of the authorities who just gloss it over. You don't want to know how difficult it is to get cops involved in suspected child abuse cases. In South Africa we have a MAJOR child abuse problem and while lamenting over a website hosting pictures of it is fair,
I don't see any laments over the actual daily abuse which goes on.

1999 Stats:
"Johannesburg Child Welfare Society official Jacqueline Loffell told the delegates that in South Africa, two girls were raped every hour. She did not provide statistics for the rape of boys."
