Hi.

I got nvidia 7950 gx2 card and now i hear all oevr the place stuff about directX 10 and that this card is a waste of money because its only directX 9 card and it won't work with dx10 etc etc. But I heard from a friend that its all noncense and that all I have to do is update bios on this card in the future and it will support dx10. Is my friend correct in saying that its just a matter of BIOS update on my video card?

Your friend is on drugs. The 7950GX2 is a DirectX 9 card, you can't change that. DX10 cards are still in developement.

Also, if there WAS a "BIOS flash" you could do, the card STILL wouldn't perform anything like a true DX10 card.

NO. Not as far as I know, Id say hes talking **** to you.

Direct X version support is hardware stuff I think, you have to upgrade the card itself.

uuum, you dont upgrade the card, you "throw" it away and get a new one. (By throw it away, i mean sell it to somebody for peanuts). The DX spec of a card relates specifically to the design of the logic inside the GPU. This is manufactured in a waffer fab (with nVidia probably TSCM or UMC) and is completely unchange-able.

Yeah, but no worries mate, DX9 will be well supported for a long time, and your card is KICK-ASS!
So really, I don't think you have anything to complain about for at LEAST a year! :)
..and in the meantime you can wait (while playing top-notch games, with all the eye candy switched on, at high res.'s etc.) for any bugs to be worked out of DX10 cards, and see what the "best bang 4 ur buck" card is.
AND, when they come out, they will invariably be overpriced, ..and by the time there are plenty of GOOD games that support it -and DX10 has matured-, those initial cards will most likely be obsolete.
Think about it mate, ..happy days 4 you! ;)

I don't think someone with a 7950GX2 cares about bang for buck ;)

There's nothing wrong with a 7950GX2. it's a great card and is probably better value than staright SLI :)
To go buy one today is something I wouldn't do, but If I bought one two months ago then sure its okay, but not great.

Also don't know why people say first gen DX cards have bugs. There are no such bugs and there will not be.

DX10 is unlike any other DirectX before. With DX9 and lower you could still be DX compliant without supporting all the features as that was not a requirement at all. (DX9.0 MRT's are not a DX9 req, Radeon 9700 had but GeForcFX didn't. DX9.0c HDR+AA isn't a req at all)

With DX10 there are no optional features, you either support them all or you're not DX10 compliant. Therefor there can be no bugs.
They will not be as fast as 2nd gen cards but that's obvious.

7950GX2 should still work great under Vista DX9L :)
