Offer from eMedia for Rugby World Cup rights was too low—MultiChoice

Multichoice's demise could not come soon enough. SABC should own these rights, and these matches should be aired for anyone to watch.
It should but, if you look around the world, then you’ll notice that sports is big business, and so are the rights to broadcast events.

Rugby is not an amateur sport anymore. That ended in the 1995

Multichoice is killing rugby. The more people watching it the better for the sport.
Think SARU is helping. If they were truly passionate about the game, they would try and get as many people watching as possible, instead they are in it for the monies. They know that Multichoice will pay handsomely for the rights.

Moolah. The more that flows to SARU, the more there is for developing the game / aiding players / grassroots / covering costs... At least in theory.
Making all national sport 'free to air' will detract from the professionalism of sport, making potential sports people taking up other careers

"Because it's done that way" is never an excuse in my book.
Yes, of course.

In your book everything must be free and the players must go back to being unpaid amateurs.

How does the BBC manage to broadcast so many sport events for free?

Bigger bonuses for the execs

Something like 85% of the population pay their licence. And like what happened to the FA Cup's rights would never happen here as Multichoice is too greedy. Sky bought the rights, but the contract states that BBC and ITV is allowed to broadcast certain number of games.

I'm a MultiChoice apologist but even I find their behaviour here to be a bit much. Just let schleps have their delayed live sport. You can even put in provisions that enable you to run DStv adverts during the broadcast.

Edit: Oh wait, now I see it. MC are already catering to the schleps. This goes directly against their offering.

Exactly. Look at all the sponsors not getting their money's worth that would pay handsomely to reach 15.9m instead of 3.2m viewers. For some reason the focus has shifted from sponsors and advertisers to helping dying companies. If we're frank here they can only sell these rights because of MC and it's showing in the interest people have.

Except that those rights are made proper use of to reach the maximum people. They aren't used to squash the competition because you can't make ends meet.

And you're perpetuating a straw man.
