Offer from eMedia for Rugby World Cup rights was too low—MultiChoice

And who pays then?
Well think about it. Who would pay more to reach 5 times as many potential viewers? Who is currently paying to reach a viewership that continues to shrink?

Clearly up until now neither etv nor SABC have been willing to pay. Maybe you should offer a consulting service to help understand a workable business model

You thought about it, and that is what you come up with?

The SABC paid quite handsomely for the world cup rights, in part because of generous sponsors, even though they weren't allowed to broadcast to their entire audience.

Have you come up with anything better?

They paid a small percentage of the total amount paid by MC.

It was a percentage. I don't think it was small but I wouldn't know since we can't see the figures. Which **** the question, why does MC pay such astronomical fees to keep a shrinking monopoly in place? Perhaps this is something that will change when Canal+ takes over.

SABC should own these rights
Then they should pay for it. Most of SARugby's income comes from broadcasting rights. It's why SA can afford to produce the world's current best rugby team.

Where will the money come from if the sabc owned the rights?

Sponsors and advertisers like in the rest of the world. Also ask yourself, how are they able to pay for these rights? What has skewed our broadcasting space so much that one company wields the sceptre and without which they would not have this luxury?

EDIT: Also if you look at Ireland which is currently a better team then money has nothing to do with it.

Multichoise came up with something better.

Try to keep up.

You need to come with something better still after all the thought you have put into this.

I take you ran some numbers to determine what the rights should cost, how much players should be paid etc?

So far you are just…

Right, so can't come up with anything better than waffling. Funny it's not working for MC or for anybody for that matter. The only one scoring here is SARU which will also be a thing of the past when MC goes belly up.

Yeah, so you don’t have numbers. Or ideas.

SARU is scoring for now, but what if the goose that lays the golden eggs kicks the bucket?

For some reason the guy supporting a company that's been suspected of corrupt dealings since the Apartheid government isn't thinking about that.

How does the BBC manage to broadcast so many sport events for free?

It's law that there are certain sports events (like the football World Cup and the Euro's, the Olympics, Wimbledon etc.) which must be made available on terrestrial TV so everyone can watch.
