Offer from eMedia for Rugby World Cup rights was too low—MultiChoice

Moolah. The more that flows to SARU, the more there is for developing the game / aiding players / grassroots / covering costs... At least in theory.
Making all national sport 'free to air' will detract from the professionalism of sport, making potential sports people taking up other careers

We will not metion the so called sports administarors, or their ridiculous renumeration packages, nor the corruption, in the sports bodies, nor the politics, that are involved. Those all cost money, and are holy cows that cannot be touched, nevermind mentioned.

It's law that there are certain sports events (like the football World Cup and the Euro's, the Olympics, Wimbledon etc.) which must be made available on terrestrial TV so everyone can watch.

And corruption, has seen to it that such a law does not exist here.

Maybe people here will also pay if the SABC broadcast my favourite sports.
Maybe.

Fortunately the bbc doesn’t waste all their money on sports. They also produce top quality shows they can license worldwide.

Multichoice's demise could not come soon enough. SABC should own these rights, and these matches should be aired for anyone to watch.
There is no reason for SABC to own any rights to any sport. Its like Formula 1. Its not a amateur sport.

Media needs to merge with SABC and for viewers to use the digital boxes if they don't have TV's with digital tuners then charge dstv to broadcast SABC channels

they could even grant them a low bitrate version for sabc app...something...national teams should be for the masses...

Multichoice is killing rugby. The more people watching it the better for the sport.
No. SARU is constraining it, they are the ones ultimately in control over the licence. Same for SA cricket. Getting rugby into more TV stations across the country is in their own interest, but no, they keep it to people who can spend +R1000 a month on TV.

SARU should get with the times and not shackle their future to an insolvent dinosaur like MC.

I agree with you about SARU, but Multichoice has also contributed to the declining viewership. They intentionally pay exorbitant amounts for broadcasting rights to maintain their monopoly.
