Office 365 price increase and Microsoft extortion

Got this lovely mail this morning:

Microsoft periodically assesses the impact of its local pricing to ensure there is a reasonable alignment with the needs of customers, partners, and the marketplace, and may make changes in response to its assessment and feedback.

Effective March 4, 2014, prices for Office 365 online services priced in the South African Rand sold under Microsoft Online Subscription Program (MOSP) will increase by 22 percent to closely align with prices in most markets. Revised prices are applicable to new and renewing subscribers who purchase these services in the South African Rand directly from Microsoft.

For Office 365 Small Business or Small Business Premium customers on “month-to-month” subscriptions, your March invoice will reflect a higher price. To avoid a price increase, you may lock in current prices for another year by purchasing an Office 365 annual plan prior to March 1, 2014. Customers may purchase a Small Business annual plan by going to the “Purchase and Manage Licenses” section of their Administration console and then cancel their monthly subscription.

Current customers who purchased under an annual commitment offer via MOSP or Enterprise Agreement have price protection on their previously ordered service, and will not experience a price increase during the term of their agreement. Starting March 4, 2014, new or renewing orders for Office 365 services will be priced at the new price.

If you have questions, please contact your account manager, Microsoft Partner or Microsoft Online Services billing support.

Sincerely,
The Microsoft Office 365 Team

We were on the month-to-month plan and now they're basically saying pay 22% more or lock in a year sub right now (as in today is the last day).

Fsck I hate MS!! Had no choice but to lock in for 12 months.

Why complain, I see people daily running and locking themselves into 24 months contracts with cell/ISP providers. Do you hate them as well.

Don't really see how that is extortion. It is their product, and they set the price. And they give you a discount for a long term subscription. Pretty standard

22% is a massive increase and they tell you one day in advance?! Maybe it is just bad planning from MS's side.

we pay in euros with european company group... 15 euro pm, so as the Rand continues to go vrot vs euro, also cost us a lot more.
the Office365 service works well, but at 15euro pm for the PLAN E3... the price has grown to about R8K over 3 years for Office Pro.
pretty stiff compared to the old days when one would buy Office Pro and finance over 3yrs with the computer.

even worse still is its one plan for all users... so with Office Pro, its mainly only Access and Publisher you get extra over say Small Biz edition, which most people never even use.

How does the subscription compare with buying DVD version?
subscription is a bit more expensive, but does include the Microsoft support.
for Outlook, you dont need your own mail server hardware
and you can always have the latest version of Office.
depending on the level of subscription you get different options.
with a DVD purchase you can use it as long as it still works for you... like Office 2007 still works fine for most people's needs.
so no need to replace after 3 yrs or so, just for the sake of a newer version.
with subscription you keep paying... but get the benefits

oh yeah... and you get 5 installs, for different computers, devices (same user account)

Given the prices, I wonder which is cheaper, buying every 3 years or paying subs...

Blame MS for that. They say they use a standard but don't really. Nevermind the fact that a document on one Windows pc might look completely different on another.

^ this. Root cause is missing fonts on Linux/non-M$ systems.

I'll rather use Libre/OpenOffice than stay with M$'s [-]viruses[/-] [-]malware[/-] [-]edlin[/-] programs due to pricing concerns.
