I have to put our defensive errors down to SB's implementation of the zonal system. While he may have been a great defender in his day, his tactics simply do not suit our team. No man on the post is down to the zonal system, and it's cost us countless times already. Don't get me wrong: the system DOES work. Just not for us.
As for replacements for AW, we might see one sooner than we think if we don't make 4th this year, or win the FA Cup again, or through some miracle, win the CL (we were "lucky" to win the FA Cup last year, and it's probably the only reason AW is still with us). I think we've, regardless of what's happened, somehow fallen in love with AW's legacy. What he's done is great, because when he came to England he changed the EPL. Not just by winning trophies, but by implementing strict diets, etc (players, not just from Arsenal, would regularly go out and get pissed - under AW, that became a no-no. He turned footballers into athletes). But that's where it ends. Everyone else embraced the changes, but adapted them, and moved further forward (Chelsea, Man City, most notably). AW is still stuck in 1996. While what he did tactically worked for a while and we were hugely successful for many years (also in a huge part down to the players we had), those days are pretty much over. Again, other teams have adapted. They also have immensely skilled, lightning quick players that can counter attack in seconds. Their players are also immensely powerful athletes. In the meantime, our players are a shadow of the team we once had. They have bags of skill, yes, but how many in our team are 6'2 and built like a brick ****house? Maybe Giroud. But what he has in size and strength, he lacks in skill. The Invincibles (bar Ashley Cole) were mostly all 6-footers, and physically strong - they'd just outmuscle everyone to get the ball back. our current crop either randomly fall over, or get swatted away.
Ramble above basically translates to AW hasn't adapted to a changing league, and it's cost us. Our players aren't bad - not usually, anyway. They just need someone to guide them when they're out there. To motivate them when they're a goal down. AW simply isn't that kind of manager. He probably sets the tactics (the same ones he's used for 17 years), sees how it goes until HT, tinkers a bit, and waits for the final whistle. A perfect example of his naivety is his lack of substitutions when they game needs something different. How many times have you sat in front of your TV screaming at AW to get someone off who's been ineffective the whole game? Or when we needed a striker on if we needed a goal? I still remember how he left Eboue on the pitch, letting the poor sod get booed by our own supporters every time he touched the ball, because he was having such a bad game. Yes, he took him off eventually, but then it was too late.
We need a new manager, not because AW is a ****, and I hate him. On the contrary, I adore the man and all he's done for us. But 17 years is a long time, and it's time to look past all the nostalgia, and think of what's best for the club.
Replacements? De Boer, Koeman, Simeone, Klopp. Take your pick. They all have their flaws, but they're all natural winners who have done great things as players and coaches, and they all have fresh ideas. Give someone new a chance. We can't surely be any worse than we currently are.
