He isn't doing as badly as people think.
I was comparing his work rate to the Chelsea midfielders, he outclasses them all with an average of 63 passes per game and 3 key passes per game.
He only looks average because Ramsey's work rate is so high (avg. 70 passes per game).
Season stats after 17 games (totals for passes completed, assists, goals, distances covered, tackles won, etc) is as follows: 1. Suarez 2. Ramsey 3. Aguero... 10. Özil. Bitey edges it because of his phenomenal scoring record, but it is a huge achievement considering he missed the start of the season. Ramsey's contribution is just staggering though. We lost him at a very bad time.
Passing stats? I find them a bit weird tbh. An example: Arteta made 94 passes against Chelsea in the league game. The significance? They were all left and right! Not a single decisive pass, dink over the top - zip! I never saw the point of dominating possession if you don't do anything with it.
Özil needs to step up now, too. There are players on the team with 1/4 of his value out playing him, with 200% of his work rate. Watch Ox tonight if he starts: he'll run rings around Özil.
