I'm not sure about extending the contracts of key players rather than adding to the team. Giving Torres an increase and extending his contract by one year is a waste. The Prem is the sole priority surely. The only way to win it is be bring in enough quality players. Doesn't make sense to me.
ya he did he bought glen johnson! great striker :) but according to Rafa he can't defend :D

I don't know, I can't see how we defend different to let's say, Chelsea. Is this zonal marking system not a media myth perhaps. Do we actually use zonal marking or is it just media bollocks.

To be honest I'm not to clued up on the whole zonal marking things. All I know is that defenders are told to attack(mark) certain zones, instead of picking up players man for man.
You could see for the first Bolton goal there were THREE bolton players between two Liverpool defenders(Insua and Carra I think). Wether or not thats down to zonal marking i dont know.

In defence of Zonal marking, I clearly remember two seasons ago we had one of the best defences from set-pieces in the League when we went on a good run of not conceding from set-pieces. So yah maybe it's just down to bad defending from two injured centr-backs because Kyrgiagos looked much better than both Skrtel and Carra when it came to clearing the arial balls.

No way - I have never rated zonal marking wrt set-pieces. Generally yes, but when you have 4 opposition players in your box and three just outside then it is good to have a bit of an idea who you are lookign for...

IIRC Rafa said for two seasons we conceded the least goals from set pieces. Seems Zonal making is very hit or miss. Either works perfectly or everything falls apart

Two seasons ago we had Sami. 'Pool's problems in the air started when he didn't play and have continued after he left. Benitez has not found an adequate replacement yet.

Zigacktly what I wanted to say, though I wasn't sure how involved Sami was n those seasons when you lot had a good record.

Hasn't Torres somewhat compensated though. He might not be a Crouch/Zigic but he's not bad in the air from what I have seen...

I don't have stats to back myself up but I would say that 95% of his goals are during open play. So to answer you, I don't think he has significantly contributed in that regard.

Well if he scores 30 goals, then 6 would be from headers. How many goals do expect from defenders and corners... ????

EDIT: The reason he scores so many from open-play is because he's a damn fine striker - not because he sucks at (set piece) headers...

24/30 = 80%. Not 95%

We're just piss poor at corners. And Steven gerrard is to blame for that. For the life of me I cant figure out why he keeps taking them!

He's suffering from "I wanna be like Lampard"-itis...
