Reds paid £20m after seeing fake Downing video

When Off the Ball heard this week that Liverpool decided to fork out £20 million for Stewart Downing after being duped by fake YouTube footage of the winger showing off his skills, it was instantly dismissed as a huge steaming pile of codswallop. 'Nobody can be that stupid,' we thought.

But after trawling through numerous reports we stumbled across the following quotes from Liverpool chairman Tom Werner and Off the Ball's jaw dropped so far and so fast that we've had to have it wired back together by a hugely expensive orthognathic surgeon and can only drink soup through a straw for the next two months.

"There was some footage of Stewart where he was, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it was brilliant," Werner is quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo. "[Liverpool owner] John [Henry] and I said: 'Oh my God, this player is brilliant, we've got to figure out a way to make a deal with him'."

Read that again.

Off the Ball has the telephone number of a good surgeon if you need it.

It was only later that Werner and Henry realised the footage had been digitally enhanced as part of a campaign to boost season ticket sales at Downing's then club Aston Villa. Since moving to Anfield in the summer, Downing has scored no goals and provided zero assists in 22 Premier League games.

Liverpool chief Tom Werner denies they moved for Stewart Downing after seeing him in a YouTube video for Aston Villa.

Werner laughed off suggestions that Liverpool had bought Downing on the back of a YouTube video.

""Someone told me about this," the Reds Chairman told liverpoolfc.tv. "It's a great story, but unfortunately for the person who wrote the piece, it isn't true. It actually comes from an interview I did five months ago with Ian Ayre for our club TV channel in which I said that when we first talked about signing Stewart, we'd found a video of him kicking footballs into some trash cans. "

"I explained in that interview back in August we knew the footage had been doctored but I guess that detail doesn't really help stand up the story.

"The amount of people involved and the work that goes into a signing a player is huge so the suggestion that we'd buy someone on the back of one doctored video is ridiculous.

In a way, it is still sad.

Suarez is rubbish haha.

Doesn't matter, still scored. This Suarez hating is getting lame now, everyone else got past it except for you it seems. Worry about your own club and own players for a change.

Downing crosses to Carroll and Carroll scores. What is this scorcery. :D

I'll happily take him being "rubbish" over 90 minutes like he was today every time Liverpool run onto the pitch.
Much better service to Carroll today and I was really pleased to see Carroll and Suarez linking up for the sixth. Downing was really good and Stevie is looking better and better... Hardly missed Bellamy today. Bring on that Carling Cup next week. :D

Not hating... Liverpool supporters go on like he's the greatest player ever when he hasn't even scored 10 goals in all competitions this season. And he's lucky, if Rooney was having the season Suarez is currently having he'd be slated non stop.

Look at last season for example.

Well it was raining own goals today. Third one deserved a prize. Awesome confidence booster for our up coming cup final.

Carrol getting better and better. Just needs to man up a bit when challenged. Linked up with Suarez a few times.

Had to rub my eyes as Downing was looking decent.

Really looking forward to the cup final on Sunday.

EDIT: He actually has scored 10 in all competitions. You really need to check your facts before posting, it makes you look stupid.

6 LG, 1 FAC, 3 LC = 10.

Incase you hadn't realised yet, he has been banned for 9 games this season. He is damn good player, show me someone who is better inside the box than him?

Downing had a decent game for once in his life.

Today was also the first time that Carroll, Suarez and Gerrard all started a game together and look what happened :twisted::twisted:

Bring on Sunday!

Come on you mighty Reds!
