When last have #ManU had a coach at the World Cup?
Not many clubs have their managers doubling as international coaches. SAF managed Scotland at the 86 WC after Jock Stein's death, before moving to United.

Manchester United Transfer News: Arturo Vidal Hopes Fuelled by Juventus

Manchester United's chase of Chile's world-class midfielder Arturo Vidal has taken a step forward with the news that Juventus "must sell" either Vidal or Paul Pogba.

David Anderson of the Mirror reports the Italian giants have to sell one of their two biggest assets in order to further finance the club:

President Andrea Agnelli’s watchword is self-financing, and Juve must cash in on either Vidal or Paul Pogba to balance their books.

Ironically, United received just R14,643,454.21 in compensation when France star Pogba left them for Juve. The Italians are now demanding R1,098.26million for the player.

United are considering a R549.13m offer for Chile World Cup midfielder Vidal, which the Italian champions would find hard to refuse.

Simon Johnson of The Independent also reports that Chelsea will match the figure of R1,098.26 million for Pogba allowing Juve to make a late bid for Alexi Sanchez from Barcelona. If that deal happens then the knock on effect would probably mean Vidal staying in Turin.

But the information will come as an initial boost to United in their efforts to land the player, with chief executive Ed Woodward trying to purchase the talent outlined by new manager Louis van Gaal.

However, it was only very recently that Vidal declared he is happy with life in Italy. He said to the Italian press, per Fox Sports:

"I am fine in Turin and my family is very happy in the city. In addition to that, I want to keep on winning titles with Juventus."

Despite United's interest, Stuart Mathieson of the Manchester Evening News confirmed there has been no official talks between the two clubs.

So, Evra seems to be angling for a move:

Patrice Evra: Man Utd defender wants Juventus move

Patrice Evra has asked to leave Manchester United - but stopped short of handing in a transfer request.

Juventus had earlier approached the Old Trafford club over the France international's availability.

United recently triggered a clause in 33-year-old Evra's contract that saw him sign a one-year deal.

However, the player has contacted officials at United in a bid to push through the move to Italy and it may happen on Thursday.

Evra made 45 appearances for United in all competitions last season as they finished seventh in the Premier League after a disappointing campaign under former manager David Moyes.

He was part of the France World Cup squad and played in four out of their five games, including the quarter-final defeat by Germany.

Evra joined United for £5.5m from Monaco in January 2006.

He has made 379 appearances for the club, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008. It was anticipated he would replace Nemanja Vidic as club captain following the Serb's summer exit to Inter Milan.

Manager Louis van Gaal does have a ready-made replacement for Evra in new signing Luke Shaw should a deal with Juventus eventually be concluded, although with Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs no longer available, it would mean a significant loss of experience.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have announced their first game at Old Trafford with Van Gaal in charge will be a friendly against Valencia on 12 August.

Giggs impressed by van Gaal

Ryan Giggs has revealed the details of his first meeting with new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, explaining how the Dutchman convinced him to become his assistant at Old Trafford.
During a press conference to launch REUNITED14, a pre-season friendly that will see the Reds face Valencia at Old Trafford on 12 August, the club legend was quizzed on van Gaal and the subjects that were discussed when the pair met in May.

"When we met at the end of last season we went through the players who are here and some of the players he liked that will maybe come in. Two have already come in," said Giggs. "It's always hard during the World Cup because a lot of the players you're looking at could still be part of the World Cup, or they’ve just gone out and are now going on holiday for a rest. I'm not sure how many players will come in - we'll have to wait and see.

"I flew out and spent a couple of hours with him. We went through players who were at the club - ones who may be going, ones who may be coming in. I was there to find out how he works, what he likes and give him an insight into anything he might not know about Manchester United. He knew a lot, as you might expect. But any little thing I could help him about I tried to. We didn’t dwell on what happened last season."

Expanding on his point, Giggs continued: "Louis has a clear philosophy and he sticks to that philosophy. He won't be afraid of taking over Manchester United. He'll relish it.

He’ll look forward to it. He's been at Bayern, Barcelona... he’s been at huge clubs. Obviously, in my view, Manchester United is the biggest.

"He's not scared about the challenge, he’s not apprehensive - he can't wait. He has the experience to do it. It won’t be easy. It never is. The Premier League's a tough league to win but that's what we'll try to do. I was excited about how forthright and how clear he was about what he expects from the staff and the players."

When pressed on Holland’s performance in Brazil, where they were tipped for glory until a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Argentina saw them exit the competition at the semi-final stage on Wednesday, Giggs was unsurprisingly impressed by his new boss.

"It was disappointing to see them go out last night but it's been a fantastic campaign for him, starting with a result nobody could have foreseen. The 5-1 against Spain was maybe the standout performance of the tournament. Obviously it’s been great for the United fans to watch and for the players to see him do so well.

"It's excited everyone. He's mixed up his formations and he’s juggled around the players. To get to the semi-finals of the World Cup is a great achievement. He'd have liked to have gone further but it wasn't to be. The group he was in... to get out of that was an achievement in itself, so I'm sure he'll be pleased to go so far."
