Have to say it looks extremely likely that we will keep DDG for the season. With 4 days left in the window seems we have got our way unless Madrid cough up what we want on deadline day.

Think there is 5 days an abit. There is a bank holiday meaning the window will close on the 1st Sep at 5pm

Rooney is not good enough for #10.

On current form, yeah - hes just about good enough for the reserves. But he is good enough when playing well.

He did show a few good touches against Bruges and again on Saturday...let's hope this means his form is coming back.

I don't like a side with Januzaj and Mata on the field...that's one too many defensive liabilities to carry i.e. they get caught in possession often \ are too light on the ball and don't cover space going backward. It's something I noticed about Ozil as well...it's not that they've got poor ball control or something, it's that defenders know they can bully them off it. Sanchez \ Cazorla for Arsenal don't get swamped as much as Ozil does in the same game.

EXCLUSIVE: The truth behind the Neymar and Manchester United transfer story

In his debut blog for Yahoo Sport, Spanish football expert Guillem Balagué looks behind the scenes at the real reasons behind the biggest transfer rumour of the summer.

With the season barely started, the latest potboiler to emanate from the Camp Nou in Barcelona is underway, namely the contract renewals – or otherwise – of its most talented stars Lionel Messi and Neymar, whose contracts finish in three years time.

Sometime between now and 2018, Barcelona are going to be moving heaven and earth to make sure they get the signatures of both players on contract extensions. Strap yourselves in, it’s going to be a long journey.

This Neymar to United story (and in the future, to City, PSG, and Chelsea) will run and run not least because for those clubs with money, by which I mean REAL money, (Real Madrid, PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United), if there was the slightest chance of signing either of the two players, but particularly Neymar bearing in mind he is only 23-years-old, then they would snap it up in a heartbeat.

Not surprisingly therefore, Neymar’s people have already fired the first shots across the Barcelona bows helping offer to media the ‘revelation’ that Manchester United are interested in the player -maybe not for this summer though, or so the stories say. Why do they come out now?

It is all nonsense of course and certainly something that will have come as a bit of a surprise to United. Ed Woodward was in Barcelona for a short, slightly bizarre meeting a week ago, the main purpose of which seemed to be to express some interest in Pedro, but not with much enthusiasm. Perhaps he was trying to get the player’s price reduced or at least delay payment. It’s fair to assume that had they really wanted the player, a little more enthusiasm would not have gone amiss.

In the end they offered 28 plus two million, so when Chelsea came in and offered the full amount (27 plus 3), Pedro was left in no doubt just where he would be more appreciated.

What is certain however is that the name of Neymar was never mentioned during Mr Woodward’s brief stopover in the Catalan capital, although I’m reliably informed he did enjoy a tour of the Barcelona museum afterwards!

So, where do the Neymar stories come from?

Within the next few hours, if it hasn’t appeared already, expect to see splash headlines appearing in the Brazilian paper El Globo revealing exclusively that Neymar will fulfil a lifetime’s ambition by playing in the Premier League if he decides to join Manchester United who will offer a jaw-dropping 190 million euros for him. That is a leak from the Neymar family, who looks after his interests.

What we are seeing now is the first episode of what is going to be a long and drawn out saga because what they have at the moment is that most valuable of commodities – time. Barcelona will want to put the matter to bed as soon as possible. Neymar’s people on the other hand will be looking to take it to the wire because the closer the player comes to the end of his deal, the more nervous the club will get about the potential threat of losing one of its major assets.

It’s all about cold hard cash of course, and those stories in the press are preparing the ground and attempting with whatever means they have at their disposal to squeeze out the absolute maximum in what will certainly be a stratospheric new deal for the player who wants the next contract to give him the status he thinks he deserves as one of the top three players in the world.

I’m fairly confident that at the end of the day Neymar will put pen to paper, but mark my words, until he does we’re going to have some fun. Eat your heart out, Hollywood. Then the club are going to have to do it all again with Leo Messi.

A bit late to chime in on Saturday's match, but they seem to have the same problem at number 10; too many players on the field that want to be in the position.

Rooney was fielded as a 9 but kept on dropping deep. Mata was on the right but kept on drifting inside.Januzaj was played as the 10 but he had two players drifting in to his space all the time.

The result? No consistent width was being offered, especially down the right, nobody was stretching the field and the middle was too congested.

I still believe a decision needs to be made between Rooney and Mata and I have said this for the past two seasons now. They are both 10s. Mata isn't a wide player and Rooney, while not yet ready to be a CM, is also not an out-and-out striker anymore.

Yeah i agree with what you're saying but the problem is we don't have a good enough out and out striker or right winger.

United should've sold him to Chelsea when they had the chance. Of all the **** ups Moyes made...

I disagree. Moyes' screw-up was signing Mata because at the time they had 3 or 4 players that could play there and the problem persists. Rooney was also the only reason United were remotely competitive during that difficult season and he has lead the team in assists for the past two seasons if I am not mistaken. He's easily worth 20 - 25 goals per season if you stick him in the middle of the action; #10. And he is a third midfielder when under pressure.

3 difficult games to start the season and people want his head. It is a bit ridiculous. He's just not a striker anymore nor is he a CM just yet.

True. Hernandez may be an option in the interim, no harm in letting him have a go, but the middle will always be a problem as long as 2 of 3 (Rooney, Mata and Januzaj) are on the field together.

I think Hernandez is more of a squad/impact player. Not the type of player who will lead the line to win you a league title. I really do feel Fellaini will help bring balance up top. Someone who can hold the ball up well and offer a good threat in the box. Still not the type of forward line that will win the league though.

I agree, Hernandez has never been that type of player, but he's all they've got at the minute. Maybe a Hernandez/Fellaini rotation up front (60-30 minute kind of thing) could help for now?

Yeah, LVG will have to do that. They both offer a very different style which is good so as well, so effectively a plan B. I have faith that LVG will sort it out though. I remember this time last season the defence was in the exact same type of mess and he seems to have sorted that out (touch wood), without really adding any new personnel.
