I see he is extremely highly rated, and is already in the French squad. I think we are paying for huge promise. I am sure he was extensively scouted, hence LVG's comments on the weekend.

LVG was not kidding about being linked to a player that has not been in the press. The fee is no surprise really if you look at what Chelsea bid for Stones and in one year De Bruyne went up in value by 50 million.

LvG has rated Martial for some time & had him watched multiple times. Move became viable after Monaco lost in CL qualifier last week. #mufc

No I meant how prices have gone crazy. A young English player can have one decent season and he is worth over 30 million.

Well, a lot of factors are at play. Not least of which it's 20 years later and obviously prices have increased. Clubs getting richer owners, more money in the game via sponsorships and TV deals etc.

Still though, 'the new norm' does seem crazy.

Get him early (preseason and less money) was surely the way to go?? Were we not signing him next season season after he did his thing with Monaco for another year. Monaco being knocked out of the CL has prompted this so they say, but when did they get knocked out and when did this story come out...just after our loss? Panic Buy?

4 days between them getting knocked out and us putting our bid in.

Chances are we won't know the full story for some time. Maybe getting him in pre-season wasn't an option. From what I can tell, Monaco said he wasn't leaving as recently as two months ago, but maybe that was based on whether they advanced to the CL.

The CL thing seems to have moved things along, but probably needed to sort out details. I have a hard time reasoning that this deal was put together in the last 12 hours.
