Matic makes a big difference to this side (Pogba and Fellaini benefiting, plus he is everywhere)

Lukaku showing the positions he will take up in the box

Bailley to also come back

And Hopefully we see Martial or Rashford over Lindgard (who can play cup games)

Madrid a team who has payed together and won two consecutive CL's - cant fault their quality, but are aren't far behind. Abit hesitant and defensive for the middle part f the game, but played well when we played with more comfort and confidence

Madrid had more quality on the night. We can only beat them when we have our game plan spot on. But a really good workout as our first competitive run. But for a few chances we could have had a couple more, and similarly for RM.

Happy with lukaku goal, pogba class, matic looks a vidic in disguise, De gea being De gea, lindgard a bit off the pace and not a left sided forward, and our defense not up to standard.

Roll on West ham on Saturday.

Lidgard on pace is average at best. A worker but not much else. With our defence and Matic looking more solid, Martial must surely be the left sided player

Does Matic then make Herrera surplus to requirements? Especially if we then have to fit in Mkhi, Rash, Martial, Pogba ....

I dont think so. We play a good passing game, With Martial instead of Lindgard, we would benefit more from our passing MF

Fellaini coming on was to win more balls upfront and support Lukaku as our MF wasnt getting the ball up there with RM having the most of possession

Not the best result but we showed some good fight to get back in the game, it is Madrid after all. Sunday is what matters and a better test to see where we stand at this stage.

I think like a typical mourinho team it will be horses for courses. Most probably herrera and fellaini will replace each other depending on situation.

Mainstays lukaku, matic, pogba, De gea, Valencia, Bailly and others will be on form.

Rashford, martial, mkhi, mata are all class and happy with any combination will do. Hopefully lindelof works out as the regular cb and Shaw shapes up.

Still can't believe he would be a 100k a week average player. He does pop up for a big game. Can hopefully be our solksjaer on the wing.

He is *** and the "Big game" mantra must be put to bed now

Matic is perfect contract for Pogba and Herrera

Lukaku showing he isn't ready for big games

Bailley come back and play with Rojo

Madrid a team who has payed together and won two consecutive Champion League. This is strong enemy

Agree with Matic and Bailley comng back to add more stability at the back

How do you conclude that Lukaku isnt ready for the big games?

The service to him wasn't that great last night. He had to compete for long balls of which he won his fair bit. He held up play when called upon. Crosses were not beating the first man, so he was not going to get on them. He was able to beat Ramos to a header when the ball came into his area. He gets into the box and pounces as we saw with the missed chance and goal

Plenty of positives from the game - I can understand some of the reactions, but lets not get carried away

Madrid is arguable the best side in the World right now - winning 3 out of the last 4 CL's demolishing teams like Bayern and Juventus

We showed too much respect by playing Lindgard instead of Martial/Rashford yesterday and allowing them to play. When we stepped it up and brought on players to attack more and get in their faces, we showed that we can create chances and score. Miles ahead of the Moyes/LVG days.

We now have to focus on the league and get our stability back there and win it. This is who we need to compare ourselves with now (City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs). Going back to the Moyes/LVG days, we were there and there about, even though we weren't challenging, we were there. How much more (with what Mou has been doing), can we achieve in the league this year - thats how we should be viewing things

Not sure why we went into such a defensive mode and allowed Casimero to score albeit he was offside.

Defense, shows Lindelof needs more time to get into the tempo. So for me it would be best if we have Bailley pair with Smalling against West Ham. Valencia on th3 right and Darmian on the left.

Midfield we were overwhelmed by Modric and Isco. Pogba, Herrera, Matic, Lindgard and Mkhitaryan couldn't contain RM's midfield.

With the defensive tactics we still managed to pull off 14 shots of which 6 was on target - same as RM.

Fellaini bossed RM when he came on and pushed higher up.

JM should have put Martial, Rashford up front with Lukaku leading the line.
Don't know why Martial didn't even get any game time

Overall losing 2-1 due to a poor linesman call against RM bodes well for us. I'm very optimistic to see how we do against West Ham on Sunday. Hopefully Martial and Rashford starts with Lukaku.

Saw that on twitter ,I originally thought it was offside and this just pissed me off. sometimes you get them and sometimes you don't. the video technology is needed but after recent games, it has caused more harm than good. There was a game recently where the ref didn't call for the penalty and then a counter attack happens and the opposing team scores. While they celebrating ref blows and calls for the penalty

TBH, they are a good side and we gave them alot more respect than we should have..which allowed them freedom in the middle and the ability to pass around and get the opportunity for the goal (Matic was the only Midfielder doing something in that game)

The season starts on Sunday for us and we need to take what we can from this game and make sure we are ready to dominate on Sunday as we are at home and we need a good start

What we have learnt

- Matic will give the freedom for Pogba and Herrera to play more upfront, they should take the opportunity and play wit freedom
- Lindgard must be a squad player and shouldn't start
- Bailley is sorely missed when not in defence
- We need a more attacking LB and one with more pace if we are to play 5-3-2
- Lukaku will be in the box and we need to give him service
