I'd like to have the official MTN position on rooted android devices.
Will rooting void my warranty and if so, why?

I have a S4 that I want to root in order to access additional backup and automation functionality. I don't want a custom rom, but I want to be able to use this device to its full potential. It is a powerful computer that I'd like to use as such.

I just had my original S4 replaced under warranty(stock everything) because the sim card reader failed after a month.
I have a Galaxy S that I flashed often. It is on the latest android and still working perfectly.
Can I root my S4 without losing My hardware warranty?

AFAIK anything that increases your flash count (the so called 'triangle') voids your warranty with samsung, therefore it would void with MTN also (assuming they notice it)

You might need to talk to MTN directly over this. A web search shows conflicting answers, I have always been told that rooting voids your warranty (not directly by MTN though).

Does it really matter whether or not rooting voids the warranty? As far as I know, it is easy to unroot. Unless there is a way they can tell, which I don't know about.

Not if you use Odin.

I've used Odin to flash and it increases my binary counter. Does that not have the same repercussions as the triangle (that I've never seen btw)?

Yes it does. But using TriangleAway from Chainfire will reset the binary counter and the networks won't know the difference when you take it in for warranty repairs provided you unroot before taking it in. I have heard of people taking in rooted phones for warranty repairs and not being charged, but rather safe than sorry

 My S4's counter hasn't increased. I have no triangle when I flash with Odin and when I go to my phone's settings, it says "Samsung Official".

According to xda, triangle away does not work on the S4 i9500.
Mercurial, which S4 do you have and which root /rom did you flash with odin?

You can root ANY Samsung device without increasing the binary counter or having it display "Custom" in download mode. Just apply a signed custom kernel though the stock recovery console (from external SD card). If you try to do an 'over-the-air' software upgrade you will get a message that you software has been modified and updates are not available. Updating via Kies software still works, though.

I9500. I loaded the stock Samsung rom, which I mentioned a few posts back.
