Development

Development Section - don't do it unless you know what you are doing - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Rooting:
What is rooting/Why root?:
  • You can install a full Linux distribution, like Debian.
  • You can run applications that require root, like Screenshot and or any other application.
  • You can install market enabler and get access to the paid Android Market
  • You can install the latest Android build directly from the Android source tree.
  • Customize your boot image.
  • Create full backups of the state of your phone.
  • Create custom ROMs.
  • Because you can
  • YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRENTY - there are ways around but you need to be an expert or lucky

Before you do anything make sure your phone supports the 3 button combo
Read this!!! : http://www.xda-developers.com/android/3-button-combination-fix-arrives-for-all-galaxy-s-variants/

And here is how to root the SGS:

  • This method will keep all your data and settings! This means the phone will not be factory resetted.
  • Will work on any version and firmware
  • Go to market and search for z4root, install and root
  • DONE

Lagfix:
For all your info

  • go to market, search for OCLF, download and follow the instructions

Applications and software

General Applications:
Android market: Some people seem to be unable to access the Android market over WIFI. It seems you have to open port 5228 on your router if you want to successfully use the market through your wifi connection (for me it worked without this step)

Navigation:
From personal experiences I can recomment CoPilot which is available through the Android Market (and their website I think). To get access to the paid market see Market Enabler below (root required)
NDrive is an alternative although very exspensive (around $60, root required for paid version through market). The program does offer a 7 day trial (NO root required) and comes with a speed trap database.

Touchwiz related:
battery mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826870
touch wiz mod (5 app drawer, landscape homescreen) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822523

Market Enabler:
The paid Android market is not yet accessible from SA, only the free one. You can still access the paid market but you need a little trick, used by hundred of thousands people worldwide. You need a rooted phone (see above, use at your own risk)) and you need to install a package called market enabler.
Get the file here: http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Internet-Utilities/Misc-Shopping/MarketEnabler-88713.shtml or search on google, copy the file onto your phone and install the package through the file manager. Allow root access and open the application which will allow you to "fake" various providers around the world giving you access to their paid markets. Remember to backup your settings in market enabler before faking another provider.

Developers only: An alternative way to install the app is to download the file here http://rapidshare.com/files/358296169/MarketEnabler_v3.0.8.apk and push it onto the phone via adb. If none of what I just said makes any sense to you then rather leave it, you might brick your phone, void your warrenty and be stuck without a phone.
Use: adb install MarketEnabler_v3.0.8.apk

We should also ask, if people suggest apps or stuff to use, please provide links, where you got it from and if you can, price.

Will be posting pics of the Captivate later on today, by far the best phone to date. Will see if I can contribute in guides as well.

I'd like to know from users which apps / games / widgets are genuine winners. There's loads of shovelware in the market and sifting through it wastes bandwidth and loads of time... Also, I need links to trustworthy, credible online stores for apps, seeing as I'm unrooted still and can't install Market Enabler (or something similar).

Finally, I want some feedback from Vodacom Galaxy S users on rooting / flashing the branded firmware before I attempt similar.

Any firmware/branded version can be flashed via ODIN. The problem is getting back to the original, there are ways to do it via KIES but it can get complicated. Don't do it unless you have to or don't mind the possibility of loosing your warrenty.
Rooting works on any SGS, again the problem is unrooting. You need to reflash. To reflash to original you need KIES which can get complicated or not work at all.
