Oh bother...

Okay, this morning, on the way to work, on the N1, I'm driving.

I see this white van with a camera in it, quite far ahead.

Anyways, I'm driving, but then I see this silver ... I'm not sure, maybe a Mazda or Toyota, a sporty car flying in the right line.

I put my hazards on, you know, being nice, try to let him know but yeah. That doesn't work.
He is doing, what... maybe 100.

Now I was thinking the whole time, "dude, slow down... sloooooow DOWN!!!!!!!"

He gets to a point where he passes me (but maybe 1m ahead of me) and slams on the brake, I can see hands in the car waving about so I'm thinking, hahaha - IDIOT!

Then I look down (I don't know why) at my speedo and see that I was doing just under 80.

This whole time, I was trying to warn this idiot (and hope that he slows down) and I was gradually picking up speed (I normally do border line 70 on that road)

Anyways, here is my 'oh bother' reason.

I was chatting to a friend a while back about my first speeding fine, and the 1st thing she said to me was "was there someone driving fast on the right of you / passing you" too which I answered "I dont know" then she hinted "just make notes of this in the future"

She works at the traffic department so that raises a whole slew of questions.

So, let's say I get a speeding fine for this mornings incident and it says I was doing 100 (which I know the other car was probably doing) and I know I was doing about 80, they'll probably give me a picture and crop it with my car in it, saying I was doing 100 or whatever - but I'll make a scene.

Anyone else heard about this?

Thoughts? Comments?

Dubious IMO. Never heard of anyone being caught by mistake like that

I'm sure, but it's the way to be sly.

He was doing 100 and I was practically next to him, how do they 'seperate' the speeds?

So instead, they nail both of us.

Was the camera inside an unmarked white van?

If so, its not a stable platform...

Yip, has to be on level terra firma !

Also I had an incident that I remembered clearly coming down Van Reenens. I was in the right hand lane and a guy came past me on the left side, right at the fixed camera. The flash went off and I was definitley not speeding, never ever there or anywhere near maritzburg! So I told my wife on the spot, wait for it, we will get a fine ... well it came in the post, I demanded a Pic. Replied to them saying it was the car next to me... they scrapped the fine!

Yes, the camera was inside the white van with a guy behind the camera.

Well then the fine isn't legal or it certainly wasn't a speed trap - you seem to have a knack for spotting these things.

Also, what your friend told you is bullschit as they have cross-hairs on the camera which will indicate which car was being trapped at the time, regardless of how many cars are in the picture and what speed they are doing...

remember when you get the fine, the "cross hairs" (or whatever its actually called) must be pretty much spot on your number plates/car, otherwise the photo might have been tampered with, if so, go to the magistrate and query this

Have two speeding fines from the fiance (R100 and R300) but both pictures dont have crosshairs on and on the photo says laser. Ill contest it and see what happens. Maybe with certain type cameras they dont need crosshairs.

80 on a highway ? I hate these stupid road works !!!!!!!

If they give you the fine you can dispute it... they are about to ban mobile cameras anyway.

isnt it still illegal to trap in construction zones in CT?

i once read that to trap in a construction zone, the officer must be highly visible, dressed with those reflective gear like the workers, and must have a special license - again, one will only find out if this is true if you go contest your fine
