The M1 south highway was closed on Tuesday morning due to an oil spill, Johannesburg metro police said.

"There is oil on the road surface on the M1 south between Booysens off-ramp and the Crown interchange," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"The highway has been completely closed because of the thick layer of oil on the road surface."

He said traffic was already highly backed up and motorists would have to use Main Reef Road and the M2 east as alternative routes.

Clean-up crews were on their way to deal with the matter.

The spill took place around 9.30am, said Minnaar.

Oh NO! Hope it will be open by going home time, it will be a nightmare if not open by the afternoon.

I have to go to the Nedbank centre there at the end of the crown offramp which is usually a nightmare on any given day.
Gonna be interesting now.
