Training!!

Carrying a knife means nothing if you have no experience in how to use it.

As to what knife = the one you are proficient with.

That blade is a bit small. I am looking for something small enough to hide on your body but long enough to scare off someone who has a bigger knife.

I keep getting told size doesnt matter ;-)

Sure - you can carry bigger blade but then concealment becomes an issue.

A video has gone viral on social media, showing an old man fighting about five thugs who clearly intended to rob or hijack a vehicle carrying what looked like his family.

The incident happened at Klerksdorp CBD in North West province. Residents there told The Star that crime has increased.

In the video captured by a local woman, five thugs approach a SUV with occupants inside. The old man, carrying only what looked like a knife, is seen determined to fight off the thugs.

If the races was reversed the headline would've read:

Old black man applauded by social media users for fighting off white, would be criminals

Because the victim is white, the media will just call him an old man and the thugs "would be criminals".

“A part of me regrets taking the video, but I'm also happy I did take it,” says Thato Ledimo from Klerksdorp, who on Wednesday captured a video of a man wielding a knife fending off four men who allegedly tried to rob him or hijack his car.

“I took the video because I wanted to create awareness that there is crime in Klerksdorp. There are people who believe that Klerksdorp is crime-free and it's this nice little town which is better than all other areas,” she said.

According to Ledimo, the incident occurred at about 9.19am opposite the home affairs offices in the Klerksdorp CBD.

Ledimo has been criticised by some people on social media for taking the video instead of assisting the man fighting back against criminals.

“I don't feel bad for not assisting. I'm a woman and also feared for my own safety. There were hundreds more people who also stood and watched him as he was fighting to protect his possessions,” Ledimo told TimesLIVE.

Her biggest regret is the threats she is now receiving on social media since sharing the video.

I was thinking I should buy myself a concealed knife as well when I go out walking. Like something I can hide in my belt but long enough to defend myself.

Anyone got any ideas?
Tazer/pepper is probably a better bet unless you know what you are doing with a knife.
I have done a bit of knife training and it convinced me never to get in a knife fight with anyone.

Also... if you cut/stab someone and they are unarmed then it could get ugly. If they have a knife they most likely have used it before and might not hold back...
Its not a good weapon to use to avoid conflict, as you can see in the vid the guys has to use it before they back off.

I walk with a "walking stick" and most people just walk on the other side of the road when they see me coming... I prefer the avoidance approach.

Ok, fair enough.
Her biggest regret is the threats she is now receiving on social media since sharing the video.

That blade will easily kill someone when poked in the right spot.

Another reason why owning a firearm should be a right, people are understandably reluctant to put their lives at risk for the protection of someone else. But with guns, you can come to the aid of someone with far less risk of getting hurt yourself. Guns are such force multipliers that a little old granny with a 9mm is more deadly than a pack of men with sticks.

Watched this crazy video where a bunch of young okes were posturing and acting all tough in Brisbane at a mall. Things escalated and this one big guy kept on trying to go at the other group of guys. You can barely see the blade but the one dude's fist flashes out towards this big guy's neck and suddenly there's just blood everywhere. The dude doesn't even realise he's dying and just stands there in shock holding his neck while the mall floor turns red.

Cases like this are also why SA needs stand-your-ground and castle doctrine laws. They make it much easier for someone in the situation that this old man was in to claim self defence if he had sent one of the assailants to the great shebeen above, as they allow a person to treat their home, or the car they are occupying as an extension of their body. Which means an attack against the car or home would be justifiable to respond with lethal force.
