Yes and no.
Yes , if you know how to use it properly, i.e. done some fencing or martial arts training with swords, sticks etc, and you know how to parry, cut, block, stab ,and thrust effectively, otherwise not.
For the average joe out there a decent self defence course that offers practical advice and focuses on situational awareness would be far more beneficial than anything else.

It's easy man. You pick up the walking stick and show it to your attacker. He/she/it grabs the stick and you pull back - exposing the sword. Attacker is absolutely astonished at your magic trick - And that's when you stick the sword through his worthless heart, or neck, or eye, or brain, etc.

No. Would you start shooting at them ? Just shout at them and highlight what is happening. Imagine if everyone did that, how would they be able to walk into a crowd ?

Lol I didn't say shoot at them, you can scare someone just holding a gun and pointing at them, or a warning shot maybe. I think you can even shoot them if they are using deadly force? You can't replicate the same with your fist. Hence I steer clear of helping anyone. If it befalls me, then it befalls me.
