A video has gone viral on social media, showing an old man fighting about five thugs who clearly intended to rob or hijack a vehicle carrying what looked like his family.

The incident happened at Klerksdorp CBD in North West province. Residents there told The Star that crime has increased.

In the video captured by a local woman, five thugs approach a SUV with occupants inside. The old man, carrying only what looked like a knife, is seen determined to fight off the thugs.

Guns in the RIGHT hands would work here, I'm afraid though 99% of gun owners in this country haven't a cooking clue how to use then properly. That includes the weekend warriors shooting static targets. I am a strong advocate of joining the likes of SAPDA or SAPSA and drilling down fundamentals till it becomes second nature. It is a small price to pay, god forbid you ever get caught up in something like this.

Nice, but looking for a model that disables the attacker's muscles for 5-10 centuries.

"Old man" is derogatory in this context and distasteful. This isn't a workshop or a family braai. He doesn't even look old maybe in his 50's. Someone at IOL needs to have their eyes checked and start adjusting their attitude and practice having more respect for others. The journalist talks like he is fresh out of high school.

You're right. It is disrespectful. 'Elderly' would be a more tactful term to use to describe a member of the public but then the man isn't elderly so that just makes the journo uncouth.

And the cherry on top is "would-be criminals". They ARE criminals. How about "would-be thieves"? In an ideal world they would be six feet under.

I was thinking I should buy myself a concealed knife as well when I go out walking. Like something I can hide in my belt but long enough to defend myself.

Anyone got any ideas?
Check Bravo Tactical Africa on YouTube, they did a nice video on the push dagger. I also have the exact one from Mojo Knives that I carry with my pistol. My wife carries a smaller version.

Do they even exist anymore ?

I don't believe in a gun free world. Just one where people are responsible for their weapons, by the sounds of it most here would casually fling around their sausage like a gun. Sorry, might be the other way round.

I'm also for responsible sausage ownership.
I dont believe in a gun free world.
But I do believe in a world where majority of people are not responsible enough to carry fire arms.
Often south afrcian men have been caught pointing those things at their families.
