Johannesburg - Old Mutual has come under fire after a fed-up family was forced to resort to drastic measures after it allegedly failed to pay a funeral claim.

On Tuesday night, numerous videos emerged on Twitter showing family members carrying the body of a dead family in a body bag from Old Mutual's offices in KZN where it was dropped following the company's alleged refusal to pay out a death benefit.

According to tweets, the policy holder roped in family members after failing to resolve the dispute with the insurance company.

The videos, which have since gone viral, sparked outrage on social media, with users slamming the embattled company over its insensitivity towards the bereaved family.

This sort of thing happens more and more with greedy, arrogant insurance companies in SA where they refuse to pay out.

I'm 100% with the family on this one. What else were they supposed to do to proof to these idiots that the deceased was in fact.. deceased.

Not that simple. The policy may have exclusions. DO not pay out for Suicide for example. OR on the questionare you said no heart problems, but then you allready had 3 bypasses. No diabetes, but you are.

People lie on the questionare to get lower premiums. If you get caught out they have the right to refuse.
Not saying that is the case here, but there are numerous instances of this scenario.

This. But South Africans are entitled and will attempt emotional manipulation and superstition to try and get their way.

Apparently this is a funeral policy and not a life policy. Also according to the news this morning, the policy was paid out in cash on the spot once the body was dragged into the OM offices. I cannot even imagine how shocked the OM staff must have been.

Yup that I understand, but in this case Old Mutual did pay out eventually which shows no one was lying or whatever. Looks like a dispute that went on for longer than it should have. Almost sounds like Old Mutual were dragging their feet or maybe even tried to wriggle their way out of this one (like other companies have done before) while the family probably waited for money so that they could bury their relative.
