... insurance companies look for one or more "technicalities" to justify not settling a claim.
How sure are you they didn't just want a death certificate which home affairs were dragging their heels on?

Or just taking the fight to the street recourse, it seems to work like a charm. That is simply not true, the stats on repudiated claims vs successful claims says otherwise.
You'll never read in the news about the 1000's of claims they pay out daily, you'll only ever hear about the ones that don't. You don't often hear the reason claims don't pay out in the media all you get is emotional sensationalism. You also do have recourse by lodging a dispute with the company, if you're still no happy there's the insurance ombudsman which is genuinely impartial.
The family has buried Mtshali, a father of 38 children, on their property.
Thandaza said she contacted Old Mutual to inform them of her uncle's death.
She said she was told that her claim had been received and was being attended to.
"I then received another SMS to say the claim was being referred for additional assessment," she said.
After going back and forth with the insurance company, Thandaza and her aunt went to fetch Mtshali's body from mortuary and took it to the Old Mutual offices "as verification" that the man had died.
To be honest the thing that got me in the news report was this part
38 children???? WTF.
At the offices, they were told that the money was paid into the account.
"We wanted to be sure so we left the body at the offices and went to the bank. When we withdrew the money, we went back to fetch the body and went home," Thandaza said.

Speaking out, Mhlongo said they dealt with incompetent staff who did not help the grieving family. They had been battling to get the claim processed for nine days.
She said Mtshali died almost two weeks ago on Wednesday, November 7. Family members visited Old Mutual offices in the KwaDukuza CBD on Monday, November 11, to cash out the R30 000 policy.
"At first, they told us we need to wait 48 hours before we can get anything. We handed in all documents and followed all of their instructions."
Johannesburg - Old Mutual has come under fire after a fed-up family was forced to resort to drastic measures after it allegedly failed to pay a funeral claim.
On Tuesday night, numerous videos emerged on Twitter showing family members carrying the body of a dead family in a body bag from Old Mutual's offices in KZN where it was dropped following the company's alleged refusal to pay out a death benefit.
According to tweets, the policy holder roped in family members after failing to resolve the dispute with the insurance company.
The videos, which have since gone viral, sparked outrage on social media, with users slamming the embattled company over its insensitivity towards the bereaved family.
