Based in Jhb, I left this company that I worked for from 2015 to Feb 2021, I had settled any traffic fines I got in their company vehicle as and when they were presented to me.

Now, July 2021 they have tried to renew that vehicles licence disk and it is blocked with about 5 Traffic fines from what I can only assume are those strategically placed hidden cameras, all in the 11 to 15kph over Range, no pictures, speed, time or any usable info, dating between 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. That vehicles licence disk has been renewed annually since it was bought in 2016. They are now asking me to pay them the R1500 odd that's outstanding on the fines, and I'm not even sure if they are legit because there are no pictures and they are quite some time back, so cannot even say it was me heading to X or Y client.

Any suggestions on the way forward? I would have paid or contended them timeously should they have been sent or brought up as and when they were issued.

2017 Fine

First off, tell them that the 2017 fine has prescribed. They have not contacted you within 3 years or attempted to recover the money from you. Prescription will apply to this fine.

2018 Fine

If this fine was issued before July, see above and claim prescription on it too. If issued after July, see below.

2019 & 2020

You can ask them to send you a copy of the fines involved with the proof that you drove their vehicle at the time. They will likely be in a position to hold you liable for these fines. They have various legal options in this regard. If they do send you all this, then best is to pay up.
