I recently discovered, to my delight, that my onboard computer allows me to store up to 15GB of music and data.

I am having trouble with mpeg 4 audio files, in that after I upload it to the onboard computer...it doesnt show. Normal mp3 files seem to be playing fine. Do I have to convert these files or is there a way to make the onboard computer recognise the files?

Of course it matters! Do you honestly think that the onboard computer of all cars are identical in their operation?

Which model and year?

Ok, cool. Now I know where to hijack one!

Anyway, let me do some research and see if I can spot anything to help you out :)

OK, just dont ask me to bring the car to you ;)

Of course not! That would give away my address! I'll be more than happy to come to you :p

After looking around a bit, I don't spot anything about compatibility with MPEG4.
I can think of several reasons for this, one being that it was too complex to implement the CODEC on a firmware level and BMW just couldn't be arsed as the hardware they're running doesn't support video decoding due to lack of processing power, video being the main reason to use MPEG4 instead of MP3.
Of course, this is just an educated guess.

I'd just convert to MP3 if I were you. Maybe the dealer may be able to give you some more useful information?

You REALLY shouldn't lose quality. MP3 at 320kbps is more than enough and if anyone disagrees with me, they're welcome to come argue with me and my rather costly headphones and other audio equipment.
