Young South Africans must defend democracy to build the future they want.

This is according to Professor Thuli Madonsela, the Law Trust Research chair in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University, who was speaking at News24's On the Record summit in Sandton on Thursday.

Madonsela was part of a panel discussing "the courage to hope".

She urged young people to build a future they can prosper in.

I expected a lot more intelligence from Thuli, but then again, she is a political figure and one should rather expect this type of drivel.

If they really want to help young people, they need to go negotiate avenues to get them out of the country. This is the only future young people have. Africa has no future or prospects.

No need to. Eveyone around here voted for the DA and I don't need to build jack nothing. They get it done.

Young people have been indoctrinated with communist BS and unobtainable utopian dreams.

If she took herself seriously she would not advise young people to try and build that. It's dangerous.

What young people should do is work hard, get married and start families.

So, they should ignore her and build the future you want? And you aren't advising on your own indoctrination? Very funny.

They should do what is best for them, which is what I advise.

Most young people don't know what is best for them.

And one of the "elders" just telling them do what you want, hinting at reshaping society is highly irresponsible. That's the worst advice someone can give young people. Especially in our economy with our youth unemployment.

What are you still doing in SA? You were supposed to have moved to Panama years ago.

The founder of the Gift of the Givers, Imtiaz Sooliman, said the public shouldn't be despondent about the future.
It makes me despondent so ANC cadres get away with corruption (which impacts everyone). And then people want to die for Zuma (which sold the country).

Vote ANC out and then SA would have a brighter future...

While I agree; imagine if we got the EFF; an African version of Pol Pot crossed with Mugabe.

Amusing thing about Thuli is that she refuses (n the article) to criticise or point fingers at the ANC. It is "inequality", "government" and a "compact" is needed. All waffle. We need to encourage investment and small business, limit racist and cadre deployment policies and have affordable electricity; just for a start.

Yea.. the EFF would be the end of SA (just quicker than ANC). I thought I didn't have to specify that :D
