The 1.4 Petabyte man — South Africa's biggest data hogs

At least two fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) users in South Africa consumed over a petabyte (PB) of data — equal to 1,000 terabytes (TB) of data — in the first 11 months of 2023.

That is according to feedback provided to MyBroadband from several major Internet service providers (ISPs) in South Africa.

The Top Guy must be sharing with neighbours or downloading the same content over and over again, or running and WISP.

We have a 200/200 line and it is really not that hard to use several TB's per month - my household of 11 all has smart devices and streaming content like Youtube, Disney+, Netflix and watching Tik Tok, all consumed lots of data. Average Smartphone usage alone +- 20GB per phone this month alone. XIAOMI Streaming Box consumed 2.5 TB so far watching Netflix, Disney+ Youtube IPTV etc. Lets not forget the Laptops we have...LoL

The Xbox has a usage of 2TB this month alone, downloading and updating games. PS5 had a 1.8TB log. The kids download a game they like l, play it and delete when done and the gets a new game, when bored with it, delete...new search.

Now that kids have friends over (we are now 15 people in house over Christmas and New Year) data usage has surge very high. I use Google Drive a lot for backups of work stuff and Windows and Linux related downloads. Zoom meetings also takes data and we stream alot. Everything is in 4K these days, a single movie can use 7GB per hour and Xbox and PS5 games are +- 150GB in size, and not forgetting the updates of 70GB for new games to go with it. Would probably break through 50TB this month alone...

We have fast uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled internet, I say you pay for it - you can use it as you like. Happy Holidays my friends!!

Use internet you pay for : Hog

Jassis Susan, waar my bier, soek my bier, bring dit nou. Maak gou die rugkbi is op, jassis Susan : No name calling

Who cares what they use it on? If their ISP had an issue with it they would have taken action

I would place my bet on a WISP using residential fibre for backhaul.
1,412TB over 11 months is quite impressive, they definitely are getting their moneys worth.

And here I thought we where "heavy" users, at around +/- 2 terabytes a month, and that has gone down since 1 Kid moved out.

It's even more impressive when you consider the effects of loadshedding will have on their consumption.

Maybe they have a 24/7 onlyfans account with multiple cams.
