One Internet-less computer for every four detectives and pirated software — disastrous state of police stations

The detective services of the South African Police Service (Saps) are facing a disaster because it is left without little to no resources or support to conduct investigations, a new report published by the Solidarity Research Institute (SRI) has revealed.

SRI conducted research among police detectives through an electronic questionnaire sent to its members working in the Saps Detective Services.

So you're saying the digital dockets on these compers cannot be hacked! What a relief, what a win!

Our local SAPS office relies on the public to assist with these requirements
Someone donated a 5-year old laptop
Within a week, someone spilled liquid on it and it was ruined
I repaired five portable radios where the battery connectors had been damaged and a power switch broken. Instead of a thanks, I was cross-examined for having govt property without authority. Apparently this has to be sanctioned in Pretoria, but the local office say they never get a reply

Would be interesting to see who the police vote for - is the degradation they experience in daily life leading to higher levels of votes for opposition parties?

Again, the local SAPS office used an internet connection from an insurance office next door. I fitted an antenna to boost the wi-fi signal. This worked well for 3 years

A new station commander thought the insurance co was spying on the SAPS and had it removed. Since October 2021 they have no internet

ADT and National assist the SAPS quite a bit
They are happy to give their broken-down equipment (damaged vests, torn boots) to ADT for repair
The lock and handle on the Charge Office front door was damaged back in January by someone carrying in a recovered item attached to a concrete slab.
I offered my shop's locksmith service to repair both. Declined. The hinges on the aluminium door have come loose so there is a brick and a roof tile under the door to support it
Don't let me start on the state of the bathrooms, except to say water is taken in, in a bucket

“The same goes for stationery and even printing paper. If detectives do not buy it from their own pockets, they simply have to do without it,” SRI stated.
I can attest to this. Went to Stellenbosch Police Station the other day to get a case number. They had 2 pens. Total. 1 pen we used to fill out the forms, the other pen was used by the officer to fill out the report. The other officer behind the counter had to wait for the officer helping us to finish before they could use the pen and carry on with their work.

I just wanted to go out an buy them a few boxes of pens to make their lives easier (and more productive), but reading chrisc comments above, they probably wouldn't have been able to accept them.

To their credit though, the officers were very polite and helpful, which must be hard to maintain when you have to share pens.

I went into the detectives offices in Douglasdale and there was a cabinet with cisco, routers and switches and a DSL connection. I'm sure Noah's Ark had more updated equipment.

The hygiene and working conditions probably break multiple laws and a case should be opened. Wait...

Mate recently took his "approved" SMS to the cop shop to get his paperwork printed. Was told they can't print due to printer being out of ink for the last two weeks.

Failed State

If South Africa is not officially listed as a Failed State, then I do not even want to know what a real failed state is...
