I wonder.
Is it possible to have a page on one's website that will allow people to set up a monthly debit into a south african bank account, from anywhere in the world?

I would say no.

From what I know debit orders (SA bank to SA bank) are handled by the banks themselves (no API available). Your insurance company (for example) sends the bank a Mag-Tape with all the debits on it. The bank then verifies and runs the debits.

As far as having international debits into your account is a bit more tricky because the foreign bank would have to set that up. Plus you could have FICA & SARS problems. A friend of mines account got frozen from having money he won on betfair.com paid into his account from the UK.

This is why paypal is so successfull.

The banks require the debit order's signee's signature before they will accept it. So, if you do want to go this route, you need to use an "electronic signature" But even then, you may still be required, by the bank, to prove that John Doe signed the form on your website.

It would be best to chat to your bank, or payment gateway about this.
