There are levels of addiction and almost anything can be horrendously destructive when it gets to a certain level...

But any addiction thst requires the input of money will overtly show destructive tendencies earlier than many others.

Gambling in the UK is off the hook crazy. You are bombarded by advert after advert. All promoted by well known football stars etc. Even when you stop at a highway petrol service station (like a Shell Ultra City) they will have a mini casino next to the McDonalds.

A guy who worked for me lost his wife, became estranged from his son, ended up committing a crime to try get out of trouble with a bookie.

I went to court as a good character witness for him to help him avoid a custodial sentence.

Heartbreaking stuff.

If it wasn't for gambling I'd be destitute. However there are definitely issues that need to be resolved. I believe certain boards are doing a great job, while others aren't. The industry in SA is also heavily regulated (I've worked in a few)

Requests for information, to both Betway and World Sports Betting, regarding active South African users on each platform and what their corporate social responsibility mandates are, went unanswered.

I find that surprising, they punt their social responsibility stuff quite often. I also know the guys at both those books and I'm surprised they didn't respond. The journalist conveniently didn't ask Hollywoodbets, who have a massive social responsibility programme.

There quite a lot in the article that I take issue with, another being screenshots. People don't care about others losing, they want to see others winning. There are plenty of bad beat screenshots but people aren't interested.

Sad thing is in SA betting is about changing your life, not about making a few bucks here and there or betting for fun. On the flip side the average punter is a oke with a R10 trying to win big. Rather than guys betting big trying to win big.

Compulsive gamblers are not gambling to win, they are gambling to get their next hit of dopamine.

The more they win the more their brains get desensitized causing them to increase the amount they gamble to increase risk making the winning high even stronger.

It's an entire positive feedback loop .

In a casino sure, but sports betting?
I see it like a crossword to some people.

But you will get that person who will double down on their team, they know everything a person can know about the sport, just like people who max out their credit cards but we don’t say credit cards are the worst thing ever.

The bank wants you to be in that sweet spot of only paying the minimum to cover interest but not go bankrupt, in the same way a casino wants you to return so they’ll monitor your burn rate and not let you go bust.
That psychology doesn’t really apply to sports betting.

Just re-reading the article again and there are issues with 2 of the examples they use to paint how evil and bad online gambling is.

Melissa Morris was already a gambling addict thanks to her father taking her to pubs with slot machines.
Linda Myeni was already a drug addict, so addictive personality on full display and the gambling is a means to an end for her drug addiction.
