online gaming (xbox live and pc gaming) using 3g

yes . Hsdpa is perfect for gaming, but depend on signal strength etc.

you also need to be on a vpn with vodacom or MTN.

I use it every day and play games like gears of war, forza etc without problems.
Have not tired games like Street fighter - etc because of twitch reactions vs lag

im just trying to figure out if i need to spend all the bucks installing adsl or just getting a hsdpa or 3g card. what is the cost difference between the 2

you could maybe try testing your signal with a 3g/hsdpa phone hooked up as a modem first.
My first reaction though would be to say, if you can get an adsl line, then go for it. From my experience with iBurst, using wireless tech might give you a 'playable' experience but you will never find that it matches ADSL latency wise.

If you can get adsl do it, but if no adsl this is the second best option.

I know of a lot of people doing this while waiting for adsl.

best would be to get it on prepaid and not linked to a contract.
