Where to renew your car licence disc online — 11 services compared

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) launched its online payment service for vehicle-licence related services in February 2022, and it is more expensive than the Post Office's and PayCity's offerings, a MyBroadband comparison has shown.

For South Africans to renew their vehicle licence discs through the RTMC's eNatis online system, it costs R171. This includes a R99 delivery fee in addition to the basic renewal fee set by the government.

Still waiting for outsurance to send mine, it's been more than 3 weeks.

don't see City of Cape Town on the list as a provider?

been renewing license discs online via the City directly for years and years ... not too relevant to the rest of ZA, but we all know civilisation stops at the Western Cape border anyway

PayCity worked 100% and at R99 it doesn't look like any of the others provide better value for money.

yup, and no extra admin charge or courier/postal fees. It was a little rough during lockdown, but I recently renewed 2 cars and their times are back to normal. Initiate your request on the e-Services portal, in a day or 2 you will get a confirmation email telling you how much to pay, with an EFT reference. Once you've paid, the license disk/s show up in your postbox within 2 weeks.

The service from the local plumbing shop is superb. Sure not online, but they handle everything and let you know when you can come collect your paperwork. No reason to try anybody/thing else!

I went to ethekwini municipality and got it done 15-20 min. No filling forms if u print out the arto notification form (2 pages) and carry ID. No certified id copy needed.

I used the eNatis / RTMC website also. There were some minor glitches in the user interface, e.g. need to log out & log in to so that my car details populated, but the online process was mostly painless.

Unfortunately, they haven't delivered my disc, and there seems to be no way to contact them. I've phoned 0861 400 800 several times, always no answer. I've sent e-mails to several RTMC departments. I got one automated response, but further nothing. I even tweeted at them.

At this point, I'm hoping I get caught without the disc, so that I can go to court. According to the local traffic department, my car is licensed correctly, so, at least it is showing properly on the system. I also have a reference e-mail that I bought the license. I just don't have a disc, and there is no way to get it.

Good list but it has left out municipalities that have their own online renewal process eg. Cape Town with zero admin and zero delivery fee.

Myles, you need to do your homework, the R72.00 admin fee is added to the total fee on your licence renewal doesn't matter who you use!!! The RTMC is therefore not charging more !!!...go look at your last renewal form.

Well FNB doesnt do Eastern Cape so change it please

I always had the option to download and print the AVL form, then go to my nearest Post Office, (Elarduspark has been very convienient) pay and get the license. Now they want to send it through the post with courier.
Seems like the only option I have, paying an extra R99 fee.

Unless someone has found a way to download the AVL form and still get it to the Post Office, without paying RTMC directly?
