Nope. They (DHL/FedEx/etc. charge you VAT + Custom Duties that you must pay to them, before they'll deliver your package....

They did not charge me any custom duties and it got delivered via Aramex

My experience in the past, with shipping from other sites, usually you will pay VAT, sometimes you get lucky and things seem to 'slip' through.

Of course it is possible that Aliexpress have some special setup where they are covering the VAT or something, I would be surprised though. I'll let you know what happens with my orders, got two things incoming via UPS so we will see :)

2KW for $200 - R2,451.03. Add VAT & Import duties to that, and it would be interesting to see the ACTUAL price yes.

I'd reckon at least +- R3,000 - there's also the small matter of absolutely zero warrantee, unless of course you want to be inverterless for a good few weeks (after spending thousands to send it back to a international supplier), only to find out you're not getting a replacement for whatever reason...

Just saying, of course... What do I know :D

Yup, I won't take that risk for that amount of money. If it breaks you are doomed

Check this out - many imports where the hassle of duties etc has been taken care of - http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/content/3...oad_shedding_solutions_on_bidorbuy_co_za.html

And steep markup added, with 0 benefit added because its not like some dude on bidorbuy is actually going to help you out if the product breaks...
Also what hassle? It isn't like paying a little bit of money for duties is a giant hassle.

Anyway there are various options each with its pros and cons, do what works for you :)

Or buy it on Amazon.com/Amazon.co.uk who ship you a new one immediately while you send back the broken unit.

Amazon shipping = 1 to 2 weeks max.

Like I said. No extra charges with shipping. Ask everyone that ordered from them and let's hear if anyone paid import duties or tax :D

There is no custom duties payable on most electronic goods imported into SA. Only VAT is payable. Sometimes VAT is not charged if the item has not passed SARS for some reason e.g. Busy periods like December.

Everything passes through customs but you get that one lenient person who let's things slip through the cracks.

Yeah - definitely news to me that electronic goods don't have duties... As fat as I'm aware, VAT + Duties runs at about 21% of the declared value, and I've imported a lot of electronic stuff through the years.

Most things have VAT, this is not the same as duties.
Lots of electronics, but not all of it, is zero rated for the duties portion e.g. the DC power supply I recently imported, 0 duties.
A camera on the other hand is not 0 rated, you would pay 7% duties on that giving you your ~21% total.

A lot of the confusion comes in due to inconsistency in classification based on how on the ball customs is and how exactly the supplier packaged it how well labelled it is etc., e.g. the one time I ordered t-shirts the parcel somehow got classified as 'legumes' or something and there was basically 0 duties, I then ordered a bunch more at a later date and got hit with a nasty surprise.

The same happens with electronics, sometimes they classify it as general electronics or whatever and then it is 0 rated, sometimes they twig that its a 'ham radio' and then its not 0 rated. etc. etc. So you can import the same thing twice in a row and get different results theoretically.

Chris, my understanding and experience has been that there is 0% duty on electronic goods, there is the VAT charge and freight companies charge a "offloading" fee (assume this is for helping to clear customs) which pushes the total fees from 14% to around 20% (VAT + offloading/clearing fee).
