Chris, my understanding and experience has been that there is 0% duty on electronic goods, there is the VAT charge and freight companies charge a "offloading" fee (assume this is for helping to clear customs) which pushes the total fees from 14% to around 20% (VAT + offloading/clearing fee).

I don't think ALL electronics are Zero Rated . One just has to see which Tarrif Code it attracts and determine the duty.

Couriers usually charge a Fee for clearing costs etc. It is never for nothing as KOPI says.

Seems value of goods need to be above a certain $ value to pay vat and duties if using aramex (my experience)

Correct.

Also... If your goods are declared at an obviously low value and it gets held and checked during a random check then customs will impose vat, duties and a hefty fine based on a value they deem fit. - Happened to me once.

That will be a bummer esp if you did not asked for a fraudulent customs value

Yeah. I always put a note that they must show me the invoice they will attach before shipping and then I double check it, I've not had any problems this way yet - rather safe than sorry.

This is often how the 'snail mail' shipping stuff gets held up, no invoice attached on outside, hits customs, customs sits on it for a few months before they decide to actually notify you that they want an invoice...

So what is the conclusion, do these inverters attract duties or just VAT ?

The price is a bit high for modified I think. But then again it's 3kw .. so I don't know. What are you planning to power. I would need lots of batteries if you want to go as high as 3kw load or similar.

Just the normal load shedding requirements...TV,decoder,lights,fridge etc

I have a 5.5kw gennie that handles the whole house but uses 4 lt petrol/load shed

Overpriced, no UPS function and doesn't seem to include delivery costs either. Ellies UPS Inverter 2400kVA with 2 x Deep Cycle batteries approx R7-8000 at Makro/Game/Builders - comes with the trolley cabinet for the batteries.

For +/- R10k you could get 1 x 3kVA Axpert inverter + 1 Deep Cycle Battery - far superior system.

You could definitely buy those parts individually for the same price or less - e.g. http://www.sustainable.co.za/solar-power.html?cat=26&inverter_watt_rating=22 there is an inverter in the same price range (without looking too hard just the first random inverter link I pulled up)

There is no information on what brand/type the batteries are so for all we know they could be car batteries, a lot is going to depend on the batteries, be very careful with what batteries you pick or you will be looking for new ones a few months down the line.

Take note the Ellies units are also MSW. Geewiz has Axpert 3kVA Pure Sine Wave Inverter/UPS for R7000 and they have stock. Add 2 x Batteries = R10600 incl inverter

Few days ago I saw Ellies inverters at Builders Warehouse in Tokia. They also have the complete units with box and battery setups.
