Thought you might all need to know that from the 1st of March 2010, all taxpayers who use their personal vehicles for business travel are required by SARS to complete a logbook separating business travel mileage from that of private travel mileage in order to claim travel expenses.

Pastel Payroll has launched an Online Travel Logbook to provide tax payers with an easy-to-use Online Travel logbook for this purpose. Visit http://www.pastelpayroll.co.za/Paste...el-Logbook.asp

This is basically what our accountant told us. We need to keep in mind that this is only for travel allowances, i.e. if it's included in your monthly package. This is not the same as a travel reimbursement, where you reimbursed on mileage based on the SARS prescribed rate of R2.92 per km.

If you receive a reimbursement, you're not required to keep a logbook. However the reimbursement is limited to 8000 km per year. If you exceed 8000 km per year, then the balance is subject to PAYE on assessment.
