Only 150MW of 2,000MW emergency power will be ready by 2023​

South Africa made some progress toward adding new generation to its underpowered electricity grid, signing power purchase agreements for 150 megawatts of capacity from private projects by developer Scatec ASA that were selected a year ago.

The government’s emergency power program, also known as the risk mitigation program, has experienced multiple delays as the nation heads for a record year of electricity cuts because state-owned utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. is unable to meet demand.

The irony there is that more than 150MW of private sector (residential and commercial) Solar has gone onto the grid since they signed. Likely far far more.

Fortunately private companies going off the grid will be far larger than that, which will help Eskom greatly, especially now that companies can generate up to 100MW.

Yeah I would hazard a guess that its probably approaching 1000MW of "business" that Eskom has lost out on forever... and that number will only climb over time.

Yup, CT, JHB and Durban are all well on their way in that regard. Will take a few years but the floodgates have been opened and there is no turning back.
