If the penalty for hijacking and murder is the same, would you kill the witness to reduce the chance of anyone catching you?Not sure what the logic is behind that or where the stat comes from but OK![]()
Note that 29% is not even the expanded definition:2% of hijackers is caught, 30% of the country is jobless. Guess why crime is rising? There's less risk in crime than keeping your job these days.
And those are the official stats, I am sure it's worse than that.Released on July 30, two key figures are reported in the survey results: the official and the expanded counts of unemployment.
Official figures count how many people in South Africa’s labour force are out of a job, but looking for work. The expanded unemployment figure includes those people as well as anybody who is out of a job and wants a job, and is not looking for work.
By the official count, 6.7-million people are unemployed in South Africa, which is 29% of everybody who could be working.
By the expanded definition, more than 10 million people are unemployed, or 38.5% of people who could be working.

Unemployment in South Africa is worse than you think
The unemployment figures in Statistics South Africa’s latest quarterly report are shocking, but 3.5-million people are missing from the official countmg.co.za
Only 2% of hijackers in South Africa convicted
Crime in South Africa is out of control, and the situation is aggravated by the very low conviction rate of serious crime in the country.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) recently released its crime stats for the 2018/19 period, which showed an increase in serious crimes like murder, robbery, and sexual offences.
Our New South African brethren - are believers in Free/Mahala/Verniet. The believe they are entitled to what ever they want. I have no idea where or how they recieved this entitlement - or who or what they expect to support their state of entitlement.
The death penalty will make criminals MORE likely to kill YOU to get away.
These low conviction rates are a prime reason why the death penalty won't deter the majority of criminals in this country - hardly matters what the punishment is if it is very unlikely that you'll ever have to face it.A country in which 98% of hijackers will never be punished is the same country in which 95% of burglars, 91% of rapists and 80% of murderers will never be punished. And that is the same country in which 99.9% of corruption-related crimes will go unpunished. Now that is a country with bright prospects for the most morally and ethically bankrupt within society.
Death penalty has been proven not to deter. These low conviction rates are a prime reason why the death penalty won't deter the majority of criminals in this country - hardly matters what the punishment is if it is very unlikely that you'll ever have to face it.
Not sure if you misread my comment, but I agree - from a crime reduction point of view I'm not a supporter of the death penalty.Death penalty has been proven not to deter.

A Clear Scientific Consensus that the Death Penalty does NOT Deter
Scientists agree, by an overwhelming majority, that the death penalty has no deterrent effect. They felt the same way over ten years ago, and nothing has changed since then. States …www.amnestyusa.org
There are so many papers on it, plus would you trust our country to get it right?
Rapport highlighted that while serious crime is increasing in South Africa, the number of cases which make it to court has seen a drastic decline.
That's Affirmative Action for you. Enjoy the ride.

No, what I'm saying is that the conviction rate doesn't matter in regards to death penalty, conviction rate to prison would have the same effect. Not sure if you misread my comment, but I agree - from a crime reduction point of view I'm not a supporter of the death penalty.
