some idiots actually think that's a credible threat, just yesterday I heard a voice note on CapeTalk where a very upset tannie was saying exactly that: oh these inconsiderate evil non-payers, they should have a system similar to DSTV so they can cut them off if they don't pay

completely oblivious to the fact that the vast majority of non-payers simply don't watch that SABC crap in the first place and would fall over from laughter if they were threatened with being cut off from it
Nothing wrong with her thinking. It should just be called a subscription and they should have their own STB.

the "wrong" part is thinking it will make a positive financial difference to the SABC, it won't, in fact it will have the opposite effect, their viewership will tank and the few advertisers stupid enough to still pay SABC will think twice

they would have the subscription model ability if the DTT migration was completed yonks ago like it was meant to anyway, but it would be a mistake

It's apparent that they're spending what little money they have left on SMS's demanding payment from what I hear.

would like to see some credible stats on that, I really doubt it

two local squatter camps: DSTV dishes on every second shack, they don't care about SABC
many others like myself only see SABC every now and then by accident when I hit the wrong channel on the remote

that aside, it is purely a product-market-fit scenario, make it impossible to watch without paying and you will soon find out how many think your product is worth the price ... I'm willing to bet that is a unsustainably low number and would sink the SABC further into the abyss unless they either make it officially free or the up their game
Most of those dishes are to pickup SABC

You know we taught Zuma was bad, but under Ramadingo, corruption and looting seems to be more high and all these kak decisions seems to pop up from nowhere and guess what they seem to always get implemented, wish Zuma was here at least we know a shower would of fixed everything.

they can't have SABC on a dish without having some form of DSTV subscription (or OpenView, though the dishes are typically branded DSTV)

odds are they're spending some time on the non-SABC channels at the very least, besides it is nonsense to expect DSTV subscribers to pay a license fee as well, make it Multichoice's problem

I am one of the 24% payers. Reason why I pay is because I can afford it and cannot be arsed battling to get someone else's details when I need to buy a tv.

I don't know how many TV's I must have on my name due to my family using my details.

The SABC blamed this drop on a decrease in advertising spend across the industry and the delay in finalising its commercial partnerships on digital platforms.
This part here is the part they should be trying to fix. Would be interesting to see the decline in the advertising spend and when it started and if it coincides when old Hlaudi decided to force the local content on the SABC tv and radio channels

Actually there is, it's called DSTV Easyview and looking at the most watched shows on SA TV, hardly any are DSTV shows.
Uzalo, Skeem Skaam, there are now some DSTV shows popping up with 1 million or more viewers.

And I bet 95% of those people are white and don't even watch SABC yet they pay to keep a ****ing ANC propaganda machine going. **** them, they can go pound sand!
You need a tv licence in order to buy a tv set, are you suggesting blacks are actually borrowing the licences from white guys? Anyways anyone who pays for a service they dont use is a fool. And you know what they say about a fool and his money.

Not even seen an sabc channel in over a decade.

Unless you count watching Cyril's speeches during level 5 lockdown...

No. I'm saying 95% of revenue generation is coming from law abiding white fools; as you point out, paying their TV's licenses.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics

24% of 9.4m households & business that SABC have records for.
Stats SA (2018) had 16.7m households
Not sure the number of business in ZA, but remember a TV licence is compulsory for every TV set used in business.

I guesstimate SABC is collecting ~10% of the licenses they entitled to.
Entitlement is overrated.
Actually the vast majority do watch it and don't pay.
That's quite a generalisation.
the "wrong" part is thinking it will make a positive financial difference to the SABC, it won't, in fact it will have the opposite effect, their viewership will tank and the few advertisers stupid enough to still pay SABC will think twice

Exactly why I would like the SABC to complete DTT migration with an STB that supports encryption.

We have the ND version of Zuma, hopefully she will stop squeezing the Ramaphosa balls soon.

I think you mean borrowing the TVs, not the associated TV Licences.

Those SMS are sent by collection agencies. They get a portion of every license collected. Wonder how many people make it worthwhile.
