So all of you who want to know what happened...

Sunday evening at 23:30 I went for a pee - but it just dribbled out. Decided to wait a few minutes, and try again. Same story.

The third time round I woke my wife up, and told her I can't pee. Both of us wasn't impressed.

So off we trundled to the first hospital closest to us. They told us their ER doesn't accept our medical aid, but the admin person referred us to Zuid Afrikaans Hospitaal. We then trundled off to ZAH, but had the same issue. Eventually the admin person found that Montana Hospital was willing to accommodate us.

So off we went.

Booked in at the ER, paid the levy and filled in a lot of paperwork.

Then they took me to the medical area, and inserted a cathether. Wasn't fun either. (Ook's Pro Tip : If you know you're gonna get a cathether stuffed up your sausage, do shave your leg... :p)

Then they started to fuss about my blood pressure going up at all the stress etc, and I was wheeled off to ICU. Choccy and kids left for home.

Was quite interesting being in ICU. On one side you got machines beeping their merry songs, and people snoring as if they're getting paid for. The machine tests your blood pressure (and other related measurements as well) continuously.

At around 9 two admin clerks told me that the medical aid declined our claim - and that it was due to us being still in our probationary period, which is a year, of which two months was left.

The doctor assigned to my case intervened, and moved me to a normal ward, so as to minimize costs.

And so I was stuck in hospital. Blood pressure going up and down the whole time as if it's getting paid to do so.

(A possible reason for BP problems was that I was under a lot of stress due to the bill etc).

Cathether was removed, and I was able to pee normally. Bliss.

Anyways, so they discharged me today as we told them we could not afford to remain any longer.

Doctor gave me a prescription for blood pressure which will help a lot to keep the pesky bugger down.

Already I feel much more relaxed and better being at home. And also because somebody else (from our church) offered to pay the outstanding bill - which we really do appreciate. A big load off my back.

So now we have to see if the original problem returns or not (hopefully not)...

Eish. Glad you're feeling more relaxed.

Could the peeing problem be related to dehydration from the spuitpoep? Did they check for kidney stones etc?

I want to change medical aid but really am worried about crap like this and all the other fine print I may or may not read during the process.

Glad that you are okay.
Medical aid is the devil.

Also, unless you have gone in for something serious. Never let them just wheel you into ICU. It is a ploy that they use to bleed more money out of the Medical aid, and as many people can attest to; Medical Aid will often find half of your stay falls "Outside" of their terms of cover. So you will end up with at least a portion of this bill anyway. ICU is for Car crash victims, or people with life threatening ailments. Not someone with bladder probs.
I dont mean to underplay your problem. It is obviously quite scarey to have to go to hospital for anything unexpected, but lesson learned for next time.

...would a bit of string 'round the thigh not have worked equally well?

Yes but the nurses have to have some entertainment on those long night shifts. And what better entertainment than hearing an Ook scream when you pull off some leg hair and skin.
