OpenSuSe really strange 'bug' - OS stutters/freezes until a key is pressed

Hi,

I recently installed Linux Mint and thereafter openSuSe (11.3) on my laptop but I have been getting a really strange problem that is starting to be very annoying. I also don't know how best to describe it so please bear with me on it :)

Basically what is happening is that the OS will freeze/hang and continue until you press an input device (so keypress or clicking solves it). I have seen this in 3 places so far on openSuSe:

* When I am busy installing software with yast - the progress bar will freeze and the 'mouse busy' cursor will stop rotating. Pressing a key resumes activity. Sometimes I think the files are still downloading in the background but the desktop is not refreshing
* When the OS is starting up - the startup sound will stutter/loop until i press key or it will take a while for it to come right
* When I am playing videos with vlc - vlc will play for like 10 seconds smoothly and then the video will start stuttering until i press a key. The sound first gives in and then the video after that. At first i thought it was my wireless connection since I was playing a video through wireless, but copying a video to my local hard drive gives the same problem

In terms of hardware I used a "acer 4202WLMi travelmate" so the specs are according to that laptop

So I am not sure how to track down the cause of this problem ... anybody had any experience like this?

1Gb RAM.

I tried changing power settings last night but that didnt seem to work. There's also nothing that seems to be worth noting except for cpu frequency.

Its really annoying cause I can't theorize about what is possibly going wrong too ... lol

I seemed to have fixed it now. I had to add the kernel parameter "idle=poll" as part of the boot commands ... then it works fine

Any idea as to why it did it in the first place?

It is always good to include the exact cause in your solutions so that one knows what it was in the first place that caused it, makes it easier in the future to diagnose similar problems.
