What about ventilation?

As mentioned, the release of hydrogen(explosive gas) which is lighter than air & will buildup in the top half of an enclosed container ... at some point the buildup could become dangerous enough that it can cause an explosion if accidentally ignited by spark ... so keep the smokers outside :D

Luckily we don't have any smoker's in our home. I doubt a fire will break out

I was just chatting to my brother. He has 2x 1200 Mecer inverters at his house. In order to get rid of the fan noise when there is no load shedding, he leaves the units plugged into the wall, and leaves all appliances plugged into the inverter. He then turns the inverter off using its power button. He says this silences the fan but power stays flowing from the wall, through the inverter and into the appliances. Of course he loses back up redundancy but just turns the Inverter back on just before load shedding is scheduled to happen (Grid Watch) in order to have backup power.

Not sure if this work around is well known?

I think the whole hydrogen issue is blown out of proportions.

I think to get those kind of conditions you would need:
1) A closed and sealed lid
2) Constant overcharging
3) Months of not opening the container

For a battery to generate massive amounts of hydrogen would mean it would need to loose massive amounts of water also.

Some research :p

Flash.. it's basically standby power.

I'm also not sure if it actually charges the battery during the "standby time"

The fan would need to be on to keep the equipment cool during the charge. (otherwise why do you need the fan on at all)

It should charge during standby. My fan does not stop whether the unit is switched on or off. Only time it stops is when I unplug the damn thing from the mains

Finally had some loadshedding last night :)

Could finally test out the rig..

All is working as promised. (had no issues going through the 2hour shedding)

Update - wired my Inverter to my Mains DB using a changeover switch. Lights work perfectly. Lights in my house arent connected to Earth. Switch over to inverter and I can run all lights in my house just fine. Plugs on the other hand. Different story. Wired a few plugs to the switch and when switching over to inverter power my Earth Leakage trips a second later killing power to devices. I see these inverters dont have earth connections...so now I'm trying to figure out how to solve the earth leakage tripping on plugs issue. Researching it now. Will appreciate any feedback from anyone that might know what the cause is though. Thanks

Seperate DB linked to main DB - yes. You sound incredulous which makes me a little tense :D
