Opinions on Router

I was looking to see if anyone has experience with this product or brand.


I was looking at getting the Linksys EA6700 ... ... Is this router/brand any good .... ... How does it compare to Asus and the other brands like TP-Link

In my opinion Linksys have a really bad GUI for configuration, my friends Linksys could not show you your line statistics (not sure if it was a bug or not).

But I recommend this

I can't get that model but I may be able to get the W8980 ... I am assuming it is the upgrade (almost identical stats if I remember correctly)

GOOD for reliable links/connections
BAD for diving deep for info.

TP-LINK
used to be TERRIBLE CHEAP JUNK, seems they have upped their game in recent months.

I have a TP-link TL-MR3420 router and it's great. I don't know about there older stuff but there new stuff is easy to use and I've had no problems.

I have that same router... it works well.
I also had a custom driver written for my wireless modem, by their engineering dept. Took 2 days.

I can get the following 2 TP-Link routers:

TD-W8980: R1199
TL-AC1750: R1350


Which should I take ?



I am such a noob when it comes to this ... so all help is greatly appreciated...

All depends on your need. Only a router or must it provide connection to your ADLS/3G? (do you have a separate modem)

I require it to be an all in one solution for my ADSL ... so it needs to connect my ADSL and my LAN.

2 computers via cable, about 6 wireless devices and 1 or 2 external drives.

Must support 10mbps lines and higher (future proofing)

Linksys is basically the consumer branch of Cisco and Cisco runs the internet so you can't really go wrong there.

But on the flip side I can also tell you that a R250 router from the Chinese (Tenda) will work just as well, but it has a terrible Engrish interface.


Most of these things run the exact same hardware at the end of the day.

Negative. They're owned by Belkin these days. Linksys hasn't been particularly good quality for a long time...

What exactly is the tomato firmware people keep recommending i get ?



Also, should I be looking at a router that has a processor and memory ?

I was pleasantly surprised by my TP-Link. Replaced a Billion that wouldn't play nice with a Mac on the wireless and that had a fondness for resetting the connection randomly. The TP-Link has been flawless and with a much better UI and more extensive feature set.

Very interesting.

The Cisco stuff I still have has been bulletproof for years.

I use a d-link router (dsl 2750u) and it works for me... My first d-link (dsl 2640u) lasted me 4 years and I sold it and to my knowledge its still going strong! Best part is I spent less than R800 on my routers. Get a mid range one so that you don't feel the pinch if it gets struck by lightning.
