How true is that ?

And if its true how does it help us for the South African branding if most South Africans dont know who Thambo was but the international community knows
I think this is quite true (especially in the UK). Other SAfricans that are known overseas for their actions against Apartheid (but probably less than Mandela :) ):

That sundaytimes article reads like monty python or 3 stooges. When I first read the comment on Helen Suzman didn't realise it was the reporter making it - very strange double speak.

What are you complaining about? Potchefstroom is going to be renamed to Thlokwe. Thlokwe is a beer! According to tswana translation it means little valley.

My question is this...The specific area where Potchefstroom is situated...it is no ones ancestral lands. The closest tribe is the baralong tribe and the claimed land about 30 km's away from Potch as their land.

Now my question....why should this name change? It has no political flavour.

Sorry...derailed the thread there, but I dont live in jozie so cant really comment on JNB International.

Oh yes and another name change they are thinking of....they are thinking of changing the north west province....to phokeng province. Just say that out loud a couple of times and people will stare

In my opinion the entire country should be up in arms about this. The renaming of the Airport is in every ones interest, as this Africa's major airport, not just ZA's.

After I did read up on Tambo there are already a few places named after him, but none the less it sounds like he was a great man and did a lot for the country and if we HAD the cash I wont have a problem with the renaming but its not like we have the cash.

No, he is an ANC icon first and foremost. Irrespective really though, as this is clearly politically motivated and completely indicative of the double standards being applied in this country.

So was Jan Smuts. In terms of overall leadership, he was probably the best president SA ever had (remembering than Mandela did very little to do with running the country and had more of a role as a figurehead).

And before you say he did not represent the people, Smuts for the time was very liberal, and was fighting a huge battle against Hertzog on this.

Also remember that Smuts never belonged to the national party. He belonged to the UP. Hertzog belonged to the NP which finally ousted the UP in 1948, and established apartheid.

LOL I get a feeling those pampoenboere wont be too happy :D

But these retards are also renaming Bloemfontein. Also one of the big afrikaans city's just like potch, my guess is this is clear racial motivation to get the afrikaans people upset

Jan Smuts was an extremely important political figure in a time where politicians were actually noble and humble men. He was not only instrumental in South Africa, but indeed the world. The man indeed deserves to have plenty named after him, but alas, even his history is earmarked for removal from South Africa's heritage.

Indeed, he was instrumental in setting up the League of Nations, the precursor to the United Nations. In international politics, he was widely respected by all global leaders, from Russia to the US.

ROFL @ icyrus. What in the history of this forum actually makes you believe you'd get an answer to that question? :p

I don't expect an answer altough I do hope for one. Even if I do not get one the post will still serve a purpose.
