I saw the damaged aircraft on TV, but not mentioned in the OP article.

Who stores aircraft in long grass? Bankrupt airlines?

The damage to aircraft was also not mentioned in initial breaking news articles. Perhaps the aircraft was preparing for flights?

That is strange. I live in the area and the airport fire department is normally very good at putting out/monitoring all the seasonal veld fires in all the open surrounding areas.

The grass next to the plane that didn't burn is short.

Loads of airports, around the world, have abandoned aircraft sitting in overgrown bushes with no contact with the owners :crying: I've tried to find the owners of some to make offers on some without much success.

And you suprised why there was a veld fire to start with.

According to insiders, Acsa recently appointed a new vegetation control and grass-cutting service provider at OR Tambo International Airport after the contract of a previous company came to an end. However, the company that was appointed, Themba Qongo, is said to have been a shelf company which was in the process of deregistration when it was awarded the contract.

Airlink stopped flying there as far as I remember. Did they resume flights there now?
Nope still no flights

But the airport is still open for takeoff, landing and storage of private aircraft
At least that's what I've heard

Yip. You can see SA Express and Equatorial Congo Airlines (green tail) in the pics - both bankrupt.

The Lecin and A tail I've never seen, but they look like 737-200's which are very old and probably not even worth saving.
